This semester has been a completely new learning experience for me, as it is my first time formally studying calligraphy. I had never learned calligraphy in a systematic way before, so at the beginning, I did not really understand the concept of calligraphy. I did not know that calligraphy could be practiced by copying examples from the handbook, and that it was not necessary to fully understand the meaning of the characters.
At the start, I could not read the Chinese characters and did not know how to write them correctly, which made me feel confused and uncertain. However, under the teacher’s patient guidance, I gradually managed to follow the course. The teacher understood that I am a foreign student and that I am not fluent in Mandarin, so he taught me in a more personal way to help me understand the writing methods.
After four months of learning, I realized that my progress was greater than I had expected. Although my writing was not very neat at first, the teacher encouraged me and told me that I had improved a lot, which made me feel very happy and accomplished. I am also very grateful to be able to join this class, as the teacher is kind and my classmates are friendly. In this positive learning environment, I was able to learn about different styles of Chinese characters from various dynasties and periods, and this has helped me develop greater interest and confidence in calligraphy.
