This is a butternut squash steak sandwich
This wake you up ? A steak in a vegetarian website you say!
Well I picked up a whole butternut squash (at Trader Joes where it by the piece) rather than by the pound.
The neck region gives you round slices that I refer to as steak slices.
This dish has boiled egg so it can also be collected under the egg menu. Hopefully the page will appear in one category
Bread : Wegmans Farm Style. It is yours to choose.
Veggie : Butternut squash and onion
Spice : Salt and fresh ground pepper, pickled jalapeno
Herb : Fresh oregano
Rub : all purpose flour, bread crumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, Chilli powder, Fresh ground pepper, salt
Cheese : sliced pepper jack (Wegmans)
The specimen - about 5 - 6 lbs.
Peeled using standard peeler
Cut in round slices. The lower bulb has seeds. I discard the seeds but may be I can save and roast them for snacks next time
Heat the grill. Spray oil (canola in my case), Add the slices and sprinkle salt an pepper. Close grill and inspect after 4 minutes.
Grill the other side. I am doing it for the first time. I am determining the thickness and the cooking time. Poke with a fork to see if its is soft. This is the butternut squash steak.
This is double grilled. It does not have to be. The rub is a mixture of flour (all purpose), bed crumbs, chill powder, salt, fresh ground pepper, and grated Parmesan cheese
Press the steak on both sides and make some mixture stick to it.
Return it to the grill for about 5 minutes
Stack the sandwich. Bread slices with spread on both sides( I cannot believe it is not butter) lightly on both sides, slice of cheese (pepper jack), fresh oregano, grilled onion slice
The steak + pickled Jalapeno
One sliced boiled egg. Cover and return to grill
Grilled with cheese ooze
This is it. Served with salad
