IZVJEŠTAJ S TEACHING ASSIGNMENTA U ISTITUTU COMPRENSIVO
G. BERTACCHI – SCUOLA PRIMARIA – BUSTO ARSIZIO - ITALY
(24. veljače do 28. veljače, 2025. godine)
- Prihvaćati i poštivati različitosti među učenicima
My name is Tatjana Pešić Ilijaš and I work at the Pantovčak Primary School in Zagreb as a graduated primary teacher. I have 38 years of work experience in the teaching profession. I also lead the Drama Group at the school and prepare performances with students for all important dates and occasions at the school.
As part of the "Inquiry learning" project, I was on a Teaching assignment at the Istituto Comprensivo G. Bertacchi, Scuola Primaria in the city of Busto Arsizio. The cooperation and my arrival at the school were arranged during the school year and are the result of contacts made by colleagues from my school, who were job shadowing at that school in the previous project.
I wanted to repeat the experience of the teaching assignment form of training because it brings professional satisfaction after the achieved results and from my many years of teaching practice, to see how successfully I can convey the content to students in another school, in another country. An additional challenge was that I led the entire lecture and workshops in Italian, which I speak. It is also always valuable to compare and exchange experiences with European colleagues about working with children with special needs, because I also have these experiences in my own practice.
The topic of the Project "Inquiry learning" is very rewarding, and the neighboring countries, Croatia and Italy, are certainly connected by joint ecological actions, which was the topic of one of my workshops. In my work with my students, I carry out a lot of activities on the topic of developing social skills and self-confidence, so for this teaching assignment I prepared workshops with this goal. It was great to see how motivated and active the children were during their work, and how there was a pleasant atmosphere in the classrooms where I held the planned lessons.
OUTCOMES:
- Get to know the capital of Croatia, Zagreb, and memorize interesting facts in an interactive way
- Learn which animal species are protected in the Adriatic Sea, their life cycle
- Learn what actions are correct for one's own participation in the protection of animal species; raise awareness of the importance of ecological actions
- Develop social skills in students and encourage positive thoughts and communication with peers
- Influence the development of emotional intelligence in a way that students recognize their needs and feelings and know how to express them
- Recognize situations and feelings that cause them pleasure or discomfort
- Learn how to respect other people's feelings
- Accept and respect differences among students
A razredom.
- To sam ja!“.
Day 1 – Monday, February 24, 2025.
My first working day at school began at 12.15 pm when I met my colleague Cecilia Grossoni and her 4th A class. We started with the free time they have between morning and afternoon classes, during which they have lunch and free games on the school playground. It was an opportunity to get to know the students, and to exchange experiences with my colleague and start working. We talked about their organization of full-day classes. My colleague Cecilia teaches Italian, English and Art in two fourth grades. After free time, according to the previously agreed schedule, I gave a presentation about Zagreb in 4th A, followed by a quiz. During my presentation, the students got to know our capital city and then had the opportunity to show how much they remembered. They were very interested, and they followed the presentation very carefully and had several questions. After these activities, I played the game “Atoms” with the students, which was very well received because all the students were engaged and had to cooperate to achieve the goal of the game. After the game, we analyzed how we achieved the goal and realized how important it is to develop cooperation and togetherness in the game. The students were very active, and the impressions they expressed afterwards were very positive. I also conducted a workshop with the students to develop self-confidence "What do others think of me? - That's me!".
U dogovoru s kolegicom i u 4. - To sam ja!“.
Day 2 – Tuesday, February 25, 2025
The second working day began at 10:15 a.m. and that day I was in the second fourth grade taught by my colleague Cecilia. In agreement with my colleague, I also gave a presentation about Zagreb in the 4th B grade and conducted a quiz. The students in that class reacted equally positively to the presentation, were very interested and wanted to ask many questions. The class passed in a cheerful and working atmosphere. After that, I had a workshop for developing self-confidence – “What do others think of me? - That's me!”. As an introductory activity, the students had relaxation exercises, and then a game to create a positive atmosphere and togetherness (feeling - movement - name). The main activity was that, after analyzing which qualities were good and which were bad, the students wrote their names and the sentence on the paper with the mirror on it: This is me...
The instructions were that we were in a circle, and that on my signal, which was a short count: 1, 2, 3 ... everyone should give their paper to the student on the right. This was repeated until all the students had written one nice quality for each student. I emphasized that they had to highlight the nice quality, the one that was most important to them in that person.
The students took the task very seriously, completed it to the end, and then read very carefully and emotionally what their peers had written. It was obvious how they felt a sense of satisfaction when they saw all the good qualities that applied to them.
After class, I socialized with the students and teachers during lunch breaks and free time.
Day 3 – Wednesday, February 26, 2025
The third working day started with the first class at 8:15 a.m. and I was with the students of grade 4b for two hours, and the topic was the workshop for the development of social skills "Memento of friendship". The introductory activity was a game with dice on which feelings were written: anger, shame, sadness, happiness, fear, worry. We sat in a circle and the task was for each student to roll the dice and show the feeling that came up with a movement, word or exclamation. It was very interesting to see how the students conscientiously and enthusiastically completed the task. The feelings written on the board were divided into two groups: pleasant emotions and unpleasant emotions, and a discussion followed in which they analyzed how all these emotions are present and how we deal with them. The students actively participated in the discussion and presented their own examples.
That day, I toured the school with the students and my colleague Cecilia and saw their space and classrooms for working with children with special needs, the library, the laboratory, the classroom for art, music and physical education. The school is also equipped with an electric ramp for the disabled to move around the floors. The school is currently running a Project in Peace, and the hallways and classrooms are marked with art works, joint posters and messages about the importance of peace.
Day 4 – Thursday, February 27, 2025
I started the fourth working day at 8:15 a.m., and the next workshop was “The Life of Sea Turtles in the Adriatic Sea – Protected Animals,” which included a presentation and video material. In the introduction, we looked at the neighboring countries of Croatia and Italy on the map and the natural border formed by the Adriatic Sea. Our neighboring countries are partners in environmental actions, one of which relates to protected animal species in the Adriatic Sea. During the presentation, the students learned about the species of sea turtles that live in the Adriatic Sea, their structure and adaptation, life cycle and reproduction, and the dangers they are exposed to. The students also learned about the actions and actions they can take to protect endangered animal species. The students followed the prepared content with attention, were very interested, and showed how much they know about the topic. They actively participated with numerous questions, especially after the video material that I prepared in cooperation with the Croatian Museum of Natural History. The final activity was a worksheet on which the life cycle of a sea turtle had to be arranged in the correct order.
After the lesson, I met the school principal, prof. Grazia Magazzu, thanked her for welcoming me to the school, and expressed my satisfaction with such a wonderful collaboration.
Day 5 - Friday, February 28, 2025
The last working day began in the afternoon shift, at 2:15 p.m. I held two classes: a workshop for the development of social skills "We respect our feelings and the feelings of others" and an art workshop, following yesterday's lecture on sea turtles. With the students of 4. B, I repeated the game "Atoms", which was one of their favorites during the week, and relaxation exercises, and the central activity included expressing our own experiences and connecting with feelings, as well as ways to act in situations when we deal with unpleasant feelings and who can help us. The students were happy to express their thoughts and gave several of their own examples and ways to act when they need help in overcoming unpleasant emotions. We concluded that it is important to respect our own feelings and the feelings of other people. At the art workshop, they drew a sea turtle according to the description, and in this way, we repeated the structure of the turtle's body. It was also interesting for the students to hear the names of the body parts in Croatian.
After class, I said goodbye to the students and colleagues in a very emotional way. I thanked them for the welcome and said that my working week with them had been a very nice experience and that I had enjoyed the company and work. I highly praised the students for their activity, and my colleagues for their cooperation. The students then thanked me for all the presentations and activities during the week and expressed great satisfaction that they had participated in it. They told me that they learned a lot in a fun way and that they would miss me. I invited my colleagues to come to our school for a job shadowing or teaching assignment as part of their Project because I hope that we will continue this successful collaboration.
– To sam ja!“. Održala sam radionicu „Life of European Sea Turtle“ i nastavno na tu temu i likovnu radionicu crtanja i oblikovanja morske kornjače.
5/5
Tatjana Pešić Ilijaš – Teaching Assignment in the “Inquiry Learning” Project
As part of the “Inquiry Learning” project, I was on a Teaching Assignment at the Istituto Comprensivo G. Bertacchi, Scuola Primaria in the city of Busto Arsizio from February 24 to February 28, 2025. It was a continuation of cooperation with an elementary school from the partner country of Italy, since my colleagues had been on job shadowing at that school the year before.
As a way of participating in the Project, I chose a teaching assignment again.
My previous experience was also in Italy, in an elementary school. Since I speak Italian, it was an opportunity to further develop my language competence in a foreign language, and since I have gained a lot of experience in working with children through my many years of teaching experience, it was a real motivation, but also a challenge to show my teaching skills in a new environment. I taught with students in grades 4.A and 4. B, and while working with students, I communicated in Italian, and with colleagues in Italian and English.
I held 10 teaching hours. A presentation about our capital city and a quiz were held in both classes, as well as a self-confidence development workshop "What do others think of me? - That's me!". I held the workshop "Life of European Sea Turtle" and taught on that topic and the art workshop of drawing and shaping a sea turtle. I also conducted a workshop for the development of social skills "I respect my feelings and the feelings of others" and a workshop on the topic "Memento of friendship".
The topics fully covered the outcomes of the Project, and it was the application of the content through practical work. The students were motivated and actively participated in all forms of work that I prepared and conducted in the lessons. I achieved very successful interaction with the students. In reviewing my work, my hosts also emphasized how successfully I motivated the students.
My host teacher was Cecilia Grossoni, and the director of the Institute was Prof. Grazia Magazzu, and other teachers from the school, with a warm welcome, in which there is a very positive atmosphere, gave me the opportunity to cooperate with each other, exchange work experiences and socialize together during the working week. I also noticed their professional and humane individualized approach to students with special needs, of which there are a significant number at the school.
My grade for participation in the Project in the form of a Teaching Assignment.
