Less a species than mantle, the Deep Ones are the ruling class below the waves. Created by the Low King to serve as generals and advisers, they remain the nobility in the Kingdom of the Black Snow.
Whether an original Deep One created by the Low King directly or simply carrying the memories of their forbears, the vast experience they can call upon makes most Deep Ones competent rulers, if not inherently just ones.
Society: The most common social role for a Deep One is as a lord ruling over a region of the Kingdom of the Black Snow. However, many do not actively manage their domains, choosing to delegate with varying levels of oversight while pursuing their own interests.
Ecology: In themselves, Deep Ones cannot produce offspring. Even if they possess another clan capable of doing so, their offspring will not gain Features from the Deep One clan. This means there are a finite number, no more than the Low King originally created being possible.
It is also almost impossible for their population to permanently be decreased, since the core they leave upon soul dispersal cannot be destroyed by a force beneath the Low King’s power.
When a Deep One dissipates, the Kingdom of the Black Snow will attempt to retrieve the core if at all possible, using it to promote a prospective Deep One into the position of high nobility. Due to this, Deep Ones who leave the kingdom are covertly tracked, and will be pressured not to do so if of a low level.
Appearance: The natural form of a Deep One is akin to a massive eel, although their innate shapeshifting leads to this form being rarely used without some degree of customization.
