We are Human, are we not? - Claire Dayoun Kang (Seoul Foreign School, 12th Grade)
1. Spring
Daybreak
My day starts with the tree’s verdant being
Once again through the smile that spreads across my friend’s face who has awaited.
My start begins with the heaven’s azure being,
that paints the smile only He can bring
Hands folded
We stroll through the turquoise of the vast forest
Praying that the solemn smile of the trees around us
change not with the world around us
2. Summer &Fall
September
Is it not foolish
the human in us all
admires and loves
after all its treacherous miseries
it forgets again and again
The hued autumn leaves falling yet again
Secretly carrying the burning passion they thought had dissipated
The glistening reflects of summer everywhere;
No longer able to maintain the calmness it cannot bear
Yet the ironic tenderness of summer to autumn, and autumn to summer,
reminds us that it is because of this that we are human
that none of it should be removed
just like the blurred lines of September
3. Winter
Winter Breeze
The winter breeze unfailingly carries many things
The Christmas carols played five Fridays much too soon,
The embrace that one shares in the tantalizing cold,
A song hummed excitedly on the way to meet a friend,
The smell of cookies baking to a golden brown,
With the green leaves that will return in the spring
Winter will once again leave us
Promising that it will return
Just as it did soon after last September
when the hued autumn leaves had fallen
and the reflections of summer had glistened
It is because of this we are human
