My Activist: Jane Goodall - Estrella Mendoza (Nativity Prep Academy, Seventh Grade)
“The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves” is a quote that Jane Goodall once said when she realized that chimpanzees were going extinct because of people hunting them. Do you want to help stop animal extinction and abuse?
My activist is Jane Goodall and she wants to raise awareness to help animals from going extinct. Jane would always try to find ways to help animals or to learn about them. The moment that inspired my activist was when she was younger she would always read books about animals especially chimpanzees so she had some research about them. When she was older she went on a ship and met a feminist who was a paleoanthropologist and he thought he should give Jane the chance to get a job doing what she liked. This moment inspired my activist because she got to learn more about chimpanzees and also teach others which grew her love for chimpanzees. The problem my activist is trying to solve is to help defend chimpanzees and other animals from going extinct because of people hunting them down and killing them. The chimpanzees can't stop them so Jane wanted to be their voice and get them justice. The people affected by this problem are humans because without animals we could die. Each animal has something that they do to help humans live and if they go extinct then us and the planet would start dying and that is an issue because then there would be no living things. The forest is also affected because chimpanzees have special food and things that they do to help keep the forest alive.
The first event that my activist is known for was in 1965 when she was on television talking about chimpanzees. When she was on television she had mentioned that in the future she was going to make an institution. That had gotten many people's attention because many young teens like animals so they wanted to help save their habitat. That made a huge impact on society because when Jane realized that so many people were interested in the cause of helping animals that she had to make a campaign to start an institute. This leads me to the second major event that my activist was involved in was in 1977 when she founded the Jane Goodall Institute Tchimpounga Sanctuary Jane made a demonstration showing everyone how it will help chimpanzees and that grew people's interest to help chimpanzees. This Institution helped chimpanzees because many people were able to join and support the chimpanzees if they were hurt. Jane was able to find new things about chimpanzees everyday because she would examine them and care for them. The institute now cares and protects 150 chimpanzees. The third event that my activist was involved in was when she founded a program named Roots & Shoots that was founded in 1991. She made this program because she wanted the chimpanzees to receive equality since they are always getting harassed, killed, or hunted down. Roots & Shoots had young teens helping animals and the planet stay healthy and alive.
The events listed above had a huge impact on society because if Jane Goodall didn't become an activist for animals especially chimpanzees they would probably be extinct by now. Since Jane made an institute and a program both programs now have over 1,000 people helping save chimpanzees from extinction. Jane made a lobby for chimpanzees which helps the planet and animals so much.
A change that I would like to see in my community is to stop animal abuse. I want to make this change because many people kill all types of animals because they think it's cool or to make hair products, makeup and other things. People put chemicals on animals just to test if it will be safe on humans. They also get their body parts to sell them, use as decor,or even to use them for experiments.I want to make a difference in society by boycotting a certain product that uses tested animals and let people know so that they can also boycott it. People can protest to stop animal abuse. I can try to mobilize so that people can stop supporting bad products. A challenge that I think I will face is people not wanting to protest or boycott a certain product because they like it so much or they have been using it for a long time and some people don’t like change so it will be difficult to find a product that does the similar effect as their original.
Jane Goodall changed society by helping animals, especially chimpanzees, from not going extinct and killing the whole human population. If nothing is done to solve the problem then in 10 years the world would be different because humans use animals for food since they help us survive. Animals help the earth stay alive and humans need the earth to survive so everything alive would die including humans. I will throw trash where it goes to help the earth stay alive and if I see an animal that is hurt or something I can try to help it or take it to a vet so that they can care for it.In conclusion all the facts above are why Jane Goodall wants to help keep animals from going extinct.
