The Two Twins - Sua Kim (Golden Elementary, 6th Grade)
There were once two twins who were very close. One day when they were enjoying each other's company in their father’s house, a knock on their door was heard. The green-shirted twin opened the door, and was surprised to see a police officer standing outside.
“Your father has unfortunately passed away,” stated the officer sympathetically, “and has evenly distributed everything he has ever owned to you and your brother. The only thing he did not divide was this house. You and your brother must decide who will receive it.”
The brother in green went upstairs with a heavy heart and told his brother what he had heard from the officer. The brother in red was devastated. I am upset now, he thought, but I can express my sadness any time. Right this moment is the only time that I can claim the house. I should take this house first. Then I have my whole life for grief.
The brother in red immediately declared, “I shall have this house, as I am in a worse financial state than you, brother, and while your career in the medical field is promising, I am only working at a restaurant with minimum pay and no college.
” The brother in green was shocked. “How can you care about owning this house when our father has just passed away? Do you care more about money and property than our own father?” Ashamed of his behavior and mindset, the red brother replied, “You are right. I do not deserve this house, or anything that I may inherit. I will leave now, and you can have the house, along with our father’s belongings.” Disgraced, he walked out sadly.
“Wait!” the green shirted brother called from the window, “Don’t leave. I understand that you were simply insecure, as now that our father is gone, there is no one to care for you if you get laid off. You were in shock and desperate to secure a stable future. Forgive me for talking in anger. Let’s share this house together.”
Turning to face the window, the brother in red replied, “Thank you for understanding me. I am sorry for being so selfish, and you are very kind to give me a second chance.” As the brother walked back into the home, the brother in green added “And if you do get laid off, I will always be there for you.” “Thank you, and I will always be there for you as well,” said the brother in red.
