My Activist: Xiye Bastida - Rolayne Jimenez (Nativity Prep Academy, Seventh Grade)
“Taking care of Mother Earth is about every decision we make as a collective” is a quote that Xiye Bastida said on how she is trying to save the planet from climate change. She is also trying to demonstrate to the people that if we don't do anything the earth will perish. My essay is going to discuss Xiye Bastida and how she is trying to solve climate change in the world but she is protesting mainly in New York. She is doing marches to get people's awareness.
The moment that inspired my activist was when she was with her dad and grandma. This moment inspired my activist because spending time with her dad and grandma is what she learned from them to be an activist for climate change. She got inspired by her dad and grandma by her joining a club climate change in her high school but realized that they were not taking action they were just talking and watching movies about the environment, so she decided to take action by getting the people in that club to protest at the school and in total she gathered 600 students. The problem is my activist is trying to solve climate change because she realized from her dad and grandma that taking care of the earth is very important. The people affected by this problem are people all over the world because gas is very bad for the lungs so if companies keep producing more bad gas then the earth is going to die and if that happens trees are not going to be able to grow because it is going to be very polluted and there would be no oxygen for people to breath.
The first event that my activist is known for is the event that occurred in March 2019. The event had over 600 hundred students and it was called the environmental club. The students and Xiye Bastida protested outside the school and the reason that they started protesting at the school was because the students at the environmental club got inspired by Xiye Bastida because she said that we had to take action instead of just talking about the environment and watching movies about the ocean. The event made a big impact on society because it demonstrated how we should take action instead of making the world a not better place but a worse place. Also, she has been the leader in organizing marches and speaking about climate change and why it is important. Another major event my activist held was on September 19 2019 in which she and her friends gathered 300,000 people to strike for climate change. The event made stores close down temporarily to fight climate change. The events listed above had a huge impact on society because They demonstrated how Xiye Bastida has accomplished spreading awareness to the world with the marches she has led. Xiye Bastida was awarded the “Spirit of the UN” in 2018 for leading the march in 2019, gathering 600 students and protesting outside her school. She has also been in Time magazine because she was recognized for being an organizer for protests and for being the voice for many people.
A change that I would like to see in my community is people not smoking or vaping because one time I saw a guy outside of Burlington who was smoking and he started coughing so this is a good representation that smoking is bad for you and the environment and that is why the trees are getting polluted and the earth is dying. I want to make this change because pollution is killing trees and it can affect the earth so badly that trees could not produce oxygen so we have to start to take action. I want to make a difference in society by starting to not use the heater at my house or to not go out a lot because if I go out I would have to use my car that has gasoline. A challenge that I think I will face is my friends inviting me to go to the mall or shopping. Also, I think that I can not litter when I go to the beach and not litter in the ocean because sometimes I forget my sand bucket and it is made of plastic so it can go into the ocean and harm innocent animals.
Xiye Bastida was a great activist by taking action in New York and leading marches that she and her friends would organize. She was also the voice of many people in the city and inspired many people like me. If nothing is done to solve climate change in 10 years it would look very polluted and the plants would not grow because there would be no good nutrients in the soil or the air could be very bad due to the fuel oils and smoke. I also think that the earth would be dyeing and so would people because they would need to be breathing good oxygen, and good nutrients from the sun also global warming is caused by climate change so if the climate is changing not for good but for the bad than it would lead to global warming and that is another bad thing so in my opinion in ten years if no one does anything now then the world would be very polluted. My activist has done marches and protests to seek awareness from other people and to demonstrate some bad habits that we keep doing and don't really know it is really bad for the environment and others. Some examples are smoking, vaping, food waste, plastics, pollution, water pollution, deforestation, flushable wipes, not recycling, and more. She has won awards for leading marches and for speaking at important events. People can start raising awareness to other people or stop doing bad habits and do good habits. In conclusion, Xiye Bastida made a big impact on society and is doing everything in her power to keep Earth without bad things.
