A Heart that is not Mine - Lindsay Walker (Salem Academy Charter School, Eleventh Grade)
I hold your heart in quiet hands,
Unsure of where we stand.
It whispers promises of love, of connection,
But my soul feels unsteady
Like a river without current.
You are kind, your eyes a bright blue,
They offer something i cannot name
And yet, I hesitate,
Feet planted on the earth of solitude,
Unready to step towards you.
It isn’t you– bullshit excuse to make
Its the weight of my demons,
The echos i need to silence
Before i can speak
The language of us.
So i stay here,
Not running, yet not reaching
Holding a heart thats not mine
Waiting for the day
My heart feels light enough
To meet yours
Halfway.
