Polytrichum moss

Mosses in the family Polytrichaceae are bigger than most and have long stems. This one growing on our site could be mistaken for a group of pine seedlings, but it is a moss, probably a species of Polytrichum. It should be possible to identify it when it produces its spore capsules.

An Australian moss in the same family that has stems several cm long is Dawsonia. We haven't yet found it in our catchment, however.
