Emmenosperma

The yellow ash, Emmenosperma alphitonioides, is a rare tree in our valley and this seedling was raised from seed of an isolated large specimen.

Its seed leaves (cotyledons) and true leaves are similar to those of the small-leaved privet. However, the yellow ash has alternate leaves on the stem, while those of privet are in opposite pairs.

Our botanical advisor Mark Robinson spotted the lone example of this species one March day. It looked exactly like this photo, taken by Tony Rodd.
