Brachychiton

The Illawarra flame tree, Brachychiton acerifolius is common in the rainforest patches higher up the Ourimbah Creek valley. Along with several other rainforest trees, it became extinct lower down the catchment when most of the alluvial rainforest was cleared for agriculture. Like its near relative B. populneus it is relished as food by cattle and they eat seedlings if they can find them.

Leaves alternate on stem.

We have re-introduced the progeny of original trees further up the valley. These are now maturing and ones like that opposite will soon be providing seed themselves.
