Livistona

Seedlings of cabbage tree palm (Livistona australis) are common in some years around trees in which birds and fruit bats roost, as well as around the parent trees.

The seeds are almost perfectly spherical and about the same size as marbles. They remain attached to the seedling, nourishing it for the first year. Seedlings of the size of the one in the photo opposite are easily transplanted as long as care is taken not to break off the seed.

Seedlings of cabbage tree palm are distinguished from those of bangalow palm because their leaf is not divided into two - the bangalow seedling leaf is divided like a fish tail.
