Cissus

The two species that we have, Cissus antarctica (pictured) and Cissus hypoglauca, grow to be large vines that climb by hanging on to trees by tendrils. They produce plentiful fruit for birds, which spread the seed. Seedlings like the one opposite are common. Both species have very large seed leaves (cotyledons) that are followed by much veinier and toothed leaves.

Vines like these close the canopy and are part of the reason why the mature rainforest resists the invasion of weeds.
