Bleeding heart Omalanthus populifolius

has fruit that are sought after by brown cuckoo doves. They distribute the seed, and seedlings are particularly frequent in sunlit patches where the canopy is sparse.

Below is a seedling lookalike - snake vine, Stephania japonica.

The real bleeding heart is shown below.

Snake vine seedlings (above) are easily mistaken for those of bleeding heart. The most obvious difference is in the seed leaves (cotyledons), which are much broader in bleeding heart, as in the photo opposite. Snake vine cotyledons are narrow in comparison.

Bleeding heart seedlings develop quickly on fertile soils and, fruits like those opposite will develop within a couple of years. These are about to split, exposing orange flesh around a seed.
