Project Description
We as middle schoolers try our hardest to connect with the lower school. The teachers give us many opportunities to help and advise this new generation. Liv and I enjoy musical theater and Mrs. Cowley, the fine arts director, hosted theater classes for children from kindergarten to fourth grade. We worked as helpers for Mrs. Cowley but soon realized the kids were being robbed of valuable homework time, so while the children were practicing their scenes we helped some of them on their homework. We answered any questions they had and helped the younger ones read and write.
Purpose
We chose this project because I really love kids, and I love just talking with them and listening to what they have to say. Liv chose this project because she enjoys theater, little kids, and helping as much as possible. Together we wanted to help kids with anything they needed help on. We hope they saw us as not only homework helpers but friends.
Reflection
During the theater tutoring, we learned that some kids who need help don't always ask for it so you have to be considerate of others and always try to help. With younger kids, you also have to remember that they aren't always as responsible as they should be. Some surprises were that they forgot their scripts for theater and we couldn't help them with their lines and so. Some of them also forgot their homework which we needed to actually tutor them. They were all in different grade levels and they all had different skills. The NJHS traits that we were able to improve were our Service and our Character.
