Cara and Angelina
Our service project created a program that is a book club for kids in pre-kindergarten 4 to first grade. This will help promote and develop young reader’s skills. Meetings were held multiple times monthly for 45 minutes during study halls and electives, where we will read and discuss books chosen by the participants.
Our project’s purpose is to promote and develop young reader’s literacy skills by reading to or reading with them. Our project gave the younger students a chance to interact with older students. This can help them by promoting reading. Developing an early passion for reading is important to carry out future passions that could turn into careers.
Completing this project has been an enriching experience that has allowed us to significantly grow in leadership skills. Our service project helped us grow as a leader because it ensured that we took charge. We had to coordinate with our schedules and requirements, and adjust based on communicating with all the people that helped in this project. We worked with our advisers, librarian, and parents to ensure this project ran smoothly. Most of all, our leadership skills grew as we interacted with the participants in our program and worked out the discrepancies as we went. This project built up our independence, charisma, teamwork, and communication skills, as we worked together to form this project. This project helped us greatly advance in the 5 NJHS pillars of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship.
