Project Description
This service project was created to encourage younger kids to read. Book Worm Buddies is a book club for students in the lower school. There is a different book club every month for different grades. Kids read the book ahead of time and then come together to discuss and do exciting activities.
Purpose
It is important that all kids find a love for reading. Especially, younger students. I am trying to encourage these kids to read more and have fun doing it. By doing different activities about books, kids realize how enjoyable and interesting reading really is.
During this service project, I have accomplished many things. I have gotten many kids in each grade to sign up and come to my book clubs. For one meeting I got an author to come and talk to third through fifth graders. Kids read the book Hummingbird and during the meeting got to ask the author of the book, Natalie Lloyd, any questions they wanted. I had over twenty kids come to this. I have done many great things with this service project and I hope to accomplish more throughout the year.
These are some of the many book clubs.
Reflection
Through this service project, I learned all about students and their connection with reading. When I started the book club I realized that kids loved to read. They had deep thoughts and continued to engage in the discussion. I also learned to give kids hands-on activities that allow them to have so much fun. Some surprises that I ran into is that you always need to have an activity planned. Silence is never good in a book club. Ultimately I had so much fun working with the kids and hosting this book club.
My leadership skills especially grew during this book club. I had to plan sign-ups and go talk to the kids in advance about the book club. I was in charge of planning activities for the kids and getting all the materials. Then when the book club came I led the whole meeting. I would show the kids how to do something and assist them whenever they had any questions. This was a lot of work but it taught me how to balance this on top of my already-stressful course load. I also learned how to work with younger kids and communicate with other adults. Overall, I greatly strengthened my leadership skills through this amazing book club.
