Hobby Buddies

Project Description

In order to give children more ways to express themselves in aftercare, some volunteers and I spent time with them. We spent time playing games like catch and Uno, drawing, building with Legos, and more! In the end, we asked for feedback or requests. It was so much fun meeting the kids and seeing their faces light up at the things that they were interested in.

Purpose

I chose this project because I wanted to offer more things to do and ways to have fun while in aftercare! Although aftercare has so much to offer, I hoped to accomplish a way of giving students more ways to do things they like, and if they don't know what they like, give them ways to explore different hobbies or interests! I spent extra time at school with elementary-aged students in aftercare to do arts and crafts, play card games, board games, and other fun things that they  wanted to do!

Reflection

I learned many things from Hobby Buddies. I learned how well my peers controlled and discussed with the kids, which games were popular, and most importantly, I learned leadership. Although I had meetings with Ms. Brunet, it wasn't completely sorted out. We had some trouble getting the kids, but once we did it was smooth sailing! I was able to develop and improve the NJHS traits of service, leadership, character, and citizenship. I improved my trait of service by devoting my time after school to Hobby buddies, I improved my trait of leadership because I planned the entire thing, had the meetings with Ms. Brunet, and asked for volunteers to help me, I improved the NJHS trait of character because I learned how to better myself/become well rounded, and lastly, I improved the NJHS trait of citizenship because I built new relationships with people inside my community.
