Uncle Doug's Caramel Cake Icing
2 sticks margarine
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
Cook in heavy deep pan over medium to high heat.
Bring to a boil and cook until it comes to a soft ball (in cold water).
Then take off heat and put in pan of cold water, and whip until consistency you want it to be, to spread easily.
If it tightens too much, thin with drops of water or milk until thin enough to spread
Frost a 13x9 yellow cake - not a layer cake
