Bo-Katan (Animated Rebels)
General Notes
This CRL is unique as it pertains to a canon character, Bo-Katan Kryze, as seen in the TV show Star Wars Rebels
Utilizing the provided reference pictures will be the best aid in an aspiring builder wanting to make a club approvable canon kit.
The color scheme must be followed and matched as closely as possible.
No “kit bashing” is allowed for canon kits.
Armor should have an appropriate level of weathering to match the on-screen version.
Snaps and velcro are the preferred method of attachment of armor parts. Magnets are discouraged. No method of attachment should be visible except where specified.
Painting and Weathering
The armor colors are dark grey and a medium blue, with cream and black highlights. Care should be taken to match the colors seen on-screen as closely as possible.
Weathering should match the on-screen version as much as possible. Most weathering is silver (beskar-colored) where the paint on the armor has worn away.
Helmet
Design is the “Nite Owl” and should match the on-screen version as closely as possible. Helmet is Kryze blue, with the Nite Owl pattern in cream, grey and black. Cheek stripes are a lighter blue. Vent and back stripe are dark grey.
There is extensive weathering. Care should be taken to match the weathering to the on-screen version as closely as possible.
Rangefinder does not have to be movable. Rangefinder should be attached in such a manner that it will not come off during normal use.
Visor should be smoke black; the wearer’s face should not be visible.
The helmet is relatively shorter and wider than live-action Mandalorian helmets. However, care should be taken to avoid a “bobble head” effect. The helmet should be no wider than half the wearer’s shoulders.
The neck is not entirely covered by the soft parts, but the amount of visible skin should be minimal.
Torso and Shoulders
Torso
Torso pieces are breastplate, ab plate, and backplate. All pieces should be shaped according to the source material.
The breastplate is split into three pieces: two side pieces and a central Iron Heart. These should be separate pieces, not joined with a groove. There is approximately ½” of space between each piece.
The breastplate includes two lighted buttons on the upper left. These can be LEDs or painted.
The ab plate should be separate from the breastplate. There is approximately 1” of space between the ab plate and the breastplate. The ab plate should extend to just above the wearer’s belly button.
The back plate extends to mid-back and includes trap plates. The trap plates curve slightly in front of the neck. These plates can be integral to the back plate, or can be separate for ease of wearing. If separate, care should be taken to minimize the visibility of the seam joining them to the back plate. Velcro is recommended over the shoulders.
There is approximately 1” of space between the trap plates and the top of the breastplate.
The back plate includes a “shelf” along the top back that abuts the jetpack.
The back plate can be integral with the jetpack.
All torso armor should be sized appropriately to the wearer. The armor should not “float” on the wearer. No attachment methods should be visible. A combination of Velcro and snaps is recommended.
Shoulders
Shoulder armor should be sized appropriately to the wearer. They should be attached to the shoulder points and free to move against the upper arm. Velcro is recommended. Magnets can be used as supplementary support but should not be used as the primary means of attachment.
Shoulder armor is bell shaped and painted Kryze blue with the Nite Owl design in cream and black.
Weathering is extensive and should match the on-screen version as closely as possible.
Gauntlets and Handguards
Gauntlets should be sized appropriately and should close with a hidden hinge and/or pin-and-lock mechanism. Two side seams are allowed but the fit should be such that the seams do not gape and are otherwise as minimally visible as possible.
The various gauntlet accessories as seen on screen are required. Care should be taken that the side mounted “rockets” are made out of a material that will not snap under use. Metal or wood are recommended rather than resin or plastic.
Gauntlets should be painted to match the on-screen version. Gauntlets are Kryze blue with grey accessories.
LED lights are not required for the “buttons” on the gauntlets, but are encouraged. Alternatively, the buttons can be painted the appropriate color.
Hand guards should be sized appropriately to the wearer and are attached to the gloves. Attachment method should not be visible. Velcro is recommended.
Hand guards and gauntlets should not touch.
Hand guards are painted a lighter grey than the armor. The style line on the hand guards may be a groove in the piece or may be painted.
Lower Torso and Boots
Lower torso armor is in three separate pieces and should be shaped according to the source material. Lower torso armor should start approximately ½” below the belt when standing. There is approximately ½” of space between each piece. Lower torso armor does not extend all the way to the groin. Velcro is recommended for attachment.
Thigh armor should be shaped according to the source material. There should be approximately 1 ½ - 2” of space between the top of the thigh armor and the belt. Thigh armor should come no more than half way down the thighs.
Thigh armor should be shaped according the source material. Thigh armor may be in two pieces, or may have a groove running down the center to simulate the split. The need to support the holsters should be taken into account when making the thigh armor.
Webbing straps of a light grey extend from the thigh armor around the leg at the inner thigh. All fasteners should be hidden. It is strongly recommended that these straps provide only supplementary support to the thigh armor. Velcro and/or snaps should be used as the primary means of attachment. Attachment of the thigh armor to the flight suit must be extremely secure, as the thigh armor holds the weight of the holsters and blasters.
Knee armor should be shaped according to the source material. Knee armor is worn at the kneecap and extends along the sides of the leg but does not wrap around to the back. No attachment method should be visible. Velcro is recommended.
Shin armor is flat in front and curves around the sides of the leg but does not wrap around the back. There is a separate piece just above the boot.
Shin armor may be held on by a separate gaiter. Seams and/or fasteners of the gaiter should be minimally visible.
All lower body armor should be sized appropriately to the wearer. Painting is dark grey and Kryze blue and should match the on-screen version. Weathering is extensive and should match the on-screen version as closely as possible.
Boots
Boots are a very dark grey or black leather or leather-like material. The heel can be flat or raised, but should not exceed 1” in height.
An inside zip is permitted. Outside zips and laces are not permitted. A boot cover can be used to hide fasteners.
There is a light grey highlight on the toe of the boot that can be painted or can be an attached greeble.
Soft Parts
Flight Suit
The flightsuit is tight fitting and should fit the wearer appropriately.
The flightsuit should be made out of a stable, heavy stretch fabric such as ponte knit, scuba knit, or stretch twill. Neoprene and jersey knit are both discouraged. The primary color is charcoal grey, with lighter grey seen on the sleeves.
The flightsuit can be one piece (as a body suit) or two pieces. Two pieces are recommended for practicality. If two pieces, the dividing line between shirt and pants must be hidden by the belt.
Style lines of the flight suit should match the on-screen version.
Flak Vest
Flak vest is tight fitting and should fit the wearer appropriately.
Flak vest is made out of a thick, stable stretch fabric such as ponte. If possible, it should be thicker than the flight suit, or it can be sewn double thickness or interfaced to provide the appropriate thickness.
Flak vest has short sleeves. Shoulder bells are attached to the flak vest. Sleeves should end slightly before the bottom edge of the shoulder bells.
The collar is high and should cover most of the neck, so that minimal skin is seen when the helmet is on.
The flak vest can be permanently attached to the flight suit or can be a separate piece.
Gloves
Gloves are made out of the same material as the flight suit.
Gloves should tuck into the gauntlets so that they give the appearance of being “one piece” with the flight suit.
Belt
Belt should be made out of leather or a leather-like material. The color is a warm, medium brown.
The belt consists of a wider backing belt with multiple rows of topstitching and a narrower top belt that is smooth.
The buckle is attached only to the top belt.
The top belt and backing belt should be securely attached to each other to give the appearance of the belt being one piece.
Four pouches made out of the same material as the belts should be present. Pouches should be shaped according to the source material.
No means of closure should be visible. It is advised that the belt fastens using Velcro with the opening hidden by the pouches on one side.
Holsters
Holsters should be made out of a material that will hold its shape, such as a tooling leather, extruded PVC sheets, or plastic. Holsters should be painted to match the thigh armor.
Holsters should be shaped to match the on-screen version and should be sized appropriately to the Wester 35 props used.
Holsters are attached to the thigh armor at the top of the holster. A secure means of attachment such as rivets should be used. Care should be taken with attaching the thigh armor to the flight suit to accommodate the weight of the holsters.
Accessories
Jetpack
A jetpack is required and should be worn at all times.
The jetpack should be shaped and painted according to the on-screen version.
Attachment of the jetpack to the backplate should be secure and should not pull the back plate away from the flight suit. A harness is recommended to support the weight of the jetpack. The harness should not be visible.
The attachment points of the jetpack and the back plate should match the source material. The top of the jetpack and the back plate do not touch, but there is minimal space between them when standing straight.
The jetpack can be integral with the back plate.
Weaponry
Firearms
Two Westar-35s in the animated style should be present.
Westar 35s should be painted according to the source material. Weathering is minimal.
Blasters should be able to be worn in the holsters.
Darksaber
The Darksaber is optional.
If used, it should be in the animated style and painted according to the on-screen version. A lighted blade is recommended but not required.
Hair and Makeup
Hair should be red and styled according to the on-screen version. Wigs should look as natural as possible.
The hair band should be shaped according to the on-screen version. The color is the same grey as the armor. The lighted buttons may be LEDs or may be painted.
It is recommended that the hair band is integral with the wig.
Makeup is not required and, if used, should give the appearance of a “natural” look.
Green contacts are recommended but not required.
Materials and Attachment Methods
Kits can be 3D printed, or can be made from Sintra (PVC board), PVC piping, Kydex, fiberglass, ABS, or various metals. Eva foam, Worbla and cardboard are not permitted for use as materials.
If kit parts are 3d printed, any and all print lines MUST BE SANDED AWAY OR OTHERWISE REMOVED. No print lines should be visible whatsoever. This includes in high-detailed areas. Printed parts will be heavily scrutinized for print lines.
Overall quality of kit and neatness of wear will be judged separately from actual requirements. A kit may technically meet requirements for specific parts and still not be approved if it is not worn neatly or if the overall kit itself looks sloppy or messy.
Snaps and Velcro are the recommended method of attachment for animated-style Mandolorians due to the tightness of the flightsuit. Magnets should not be used except as supplemental support.
Glue or tape of any kind is not an appropriate method of attaching plates to soft parts and is not permitted.
All attachment methods must be completely hidden except where otherwise specified.
