FIRST THING check your breaks - Check Brutus! [HOW TO]
Read emails.
Browse Daybook, AP, KCStar, other local websites. Make sure you are up to speed on what's "new" or may be "next" based on these sources or email information.
ATTEND THE NEWS MEETING
Listen for the latest on WEATHER. Is weather your lead? If we are WEATHER AWARE, make sure you have the branding stingers, etc in. (And most likely give weather extra time.)
Be prepared to negotiate over stories for your show after the meeting.
8AM PRODUCER: Fill in the ticker with local news. (9am does it when 8am is not in.)
Start CRAFTING your rundown. Consider what people NEED to know. Consider what lends itself to a great tease. Consider good sound - for a Cold Open, or a mini-open, or a tease. Talk with reporters about potential break out elements. Consider how you might promote fox4kc.com specifically - not just "more on." Ideas for cross-promoting web.
Many producers start writing from the bottom up - because the new reporter stories and vo/vosots are still making their way back. But it's a good idea to pick a time of day to flip to top down, even if you skip reporters. You could write reporter intros (so everything flows). Check the intro with your reporter. (Stay in touch with your reporter - you should know how he/she is doing.) If you work from the top down, if you get behind - it's easier to finish something up toward the end of your show rather than the beginning. PUT YOUR INITIALS IN AS YOU FINISH YOUR SCRIPTS. (In the "writer" column)
TEASES. As you put stories in, you might make a note in the tease about what it was that made you choose the story - that's the hook! Teases are most often put off until last. Teases are very important - give them the time they deserve, rather than slamming them in at the last minute. Tease writing tips.
BRANDING: What stories can you brand "Working for You"? Not just reporter stories - even VOs can be "Working for You." Use the branding elements to showcase "Working for You" stories.
CHECK YOUR VIDEO. (Especially tease video!) Go to your rundown in Bit Central. Green is online, black is not. Click on a story to watch the video. OR check your video straight from the show rundown. Here's how to do that.
