Maintain FOX4’s ratings leadership position in the 'People: 25-54' demographic in key newscasts through 2021.
Increase local content and grow pages per session by 40% on fox4kc.com by end of 2021.
As part of Nexstar’s company-wide digital initiative, FOX4 is a “Digital First” station, which entails mission, attitude, and expectations.
So, what does that mean to you?
· Digital doesn’t wait for broadcast: A break from mentality of the past where we waited for news to be reported on TV, now we move with information as soon as we have the necessary confirmation. Unless there’s a specific conversation around a story, the digital team works in concert with the news desk and reporters to publish stories as fast as we can.
· Digital has resources: Gone are the days of an EP + 3 content producers, now we have a larger team with strategic roles, including:
o Digital Content Manager – Ultimately responsible for day-to-day execution and short-term and long-term strategy
o Digital Content Producers – Responsible for publishing breaking, daily and enterprised news stories, sharing content on social media, cutting video, newsgathering via messages sent in to the website and Facebook inbox
o Audience Producer
o Homepage Producer
o Live Producer
o Digital Investigative Producer
o Digital Reporter
o Digital Sports Reporter
o Social Media Producer
· Digital does livestreaming aggressively: Utilizing OBS (Opensource Broadcast Software), satellite feeds and our crews in the field, we’re on the hunt for opportunities to livestream
· Digital looks for opportunities to expand on reporter stories with extra elements, whether they’re breakout stories, extended video clips, extra photos and photo galleries.
· The digital team employs strategies around social engagement, search engine optimization, homepage and site curation, and newsletters to feature our content to meet our viewers where they’re looking for us, whether that’s on Facebook, Google, their email or when they come to our site directly.
· The digital production team is tasked with finding and enterprising unique content that we can feature across platforms, including on TV. Content that originates on digital should be communicated to show producers so they can find ways to incorporate and/or toss to the website and app.
Avoid "moron" teases! ex. "For more on this story, go to fox4kc.com."
Teases need to be specific to the content or story. Better: "To see all of Bill Self's new contract - go to fox4kc.com."
MAKE SURE the story is posted BEFORE it is teased.
Consider what may already be on the website to help build out your coverage.
Example: fox4kc.com/Chiefs for the schedule, etc. or fox4kc.com/coronavirus for vaccine locations.
FOX4KC.COM: You should be constantly looking for specific content to tease to push people to FOX4KC.COM. Don't just write a script that says "for moron on this story go to fox4kc.com." MORON writing. Instead, give something specific the viewer can find. Examples:
READ THE WHOLE DOCUMENT ON FOX4KC.COM
WE'VE PUT THESE 5 TIPS ON FOX4KC.COM
WE'VE PUT THE FORM ON FOX4KC.COM
WE'VE PUT THIS PHONE NUMBER AND ADDRESS ON FOX4KC.COM
*MAKE SURE THE CONTENT IS ONLINE *BEFORE YOU TEASE IT!
FOX4 APP: Did we break a story in a push alert? That's a great thing to mention in copy. "You saw this first on as alert on your phone. If you don't get our news alerts, sign up for the FOX4 app now so you don't miss a thing."
We often tease the app after Weather coverage as a reminder. Consider teasing the app BEFORE the weather coverage if we know severe weather is coming. "Sign up right now for the FOX4 news app so you get storm updates as they happen." OR "If your power goes out - you can still watch us online on the FOX4 app."
We can also tease traffic. "Get instant updates on traffic delays on the FOX4 app."
Also up-to-the-minute school closings ... Joe's weather blog...top stories of the day...
LIVE STREAMING: What's live streaming today? Be sure to know what's on tap so you can tease an 11am Chiefs news conference ... or a 2pm news briefing ... And you can say, "We streamed this news conference as it happened live - you can watch live events on the FOX4 app."
Post a picture to Slack or send one in.
Send in video as soon as you can.
POST TO SOCIAL!
Make sure your first web story is updated with quotes from your package or anything additional you've learned since the first post.
CHECK FOR THEM!
