ON THIS PAGE: DAILY CHECKLIST, BOOTHING, CHECKING THE LOG, NEWS MEETING INFO, COMMUNICATION REMINDERS, DIGITAL CONTENT NOTES, BREAKOUT ELEMENTS, USING THE SET, SOUND, VNR/HANDOUT VIDEO, FCC CODES
This should be what you do to start your day. Your breaks may be the same for 324 days - but the one day they change, you could really get burned timing your show. Here's how to check breaks:
"Email Address": wdaf producer (not really an email)
Password: wdaf
Once you are logged in - you should see links down the left side:
Go to where it says "TRAFFIC" and click on "PLAY LISTS."
Then find Traffic Playlist 4.1 and today's date:
Click on the file with a pencil, circled below:
Add up the times. In this case, the break is 2:00
SLACK:
Check all new posts to Slack for information from the desk, reporter updates, digital content, etc.
EMAIL:
Read emails before, during and after your shift.
USE THE PHONE:
Call your reporters. Don't ask your manager to make all your calls. Stay in touch. Be the person who knows the most about what/how a reporter is doing.
TALK TO ANCHORS:
Talk with your anchors before the show and DURING the show. If you can, check in after the show for a quick post.
Check in on IFB. Give time cues - don't just rely on the clock.
TALK TO DIRECTORS:
Be in constant communication with your director pre-show. During the show, check in and keep the director in the loop. Brief after the show to discuss any issues that popped up.
FOX4KC.COM: You should be constantly looking for specific content to tease to push people to FOX4KC.COM. Don't just write a script that says "for moron on this story go to fox4kc.com." MORON writing. Instead, give something specific the viewer can find. Examples:
READ THE WHOLE DOCUMENT ON FOX4KC.COM
WE'VE PUT THESE 5 TIPS ON FOX4KC.COM
WE'VE PUT THE FORM ON FOX4KC.COM
WE'VE PUT THIS PHONE NUMBER AND ADDRESS ON FOX4KC.COM
*MAKE SURE THE CONTENT IS ONLINE *BEFORE YOU TEASE IT!
FOX4 APP: Did we break a story in a push alert? That's a great thing to mention in copy. "You saw this first on as alert on your phone. If you don't get our news alerts, sign up for the FOX4 app now so you don't miss a thing."
We often tease the app after Weather coverage as a reminder. Consider teasing the app BEFORE the weather coverage if we know severe weather is coming. "Sign up right now for the FOX4 news app so you get storm updates as they happen." OR "If your power goes out - you can still watch us online on the FOX4 app."
We can also tease traffic. "Get instant updates on traffic delays on the FOX4 app."
Also up-to-the-minute school closings ... Joe's weather blog...top stories of the day...
LIVE STREAMING: What's live streaming today? Be sure to know what's on tap so you can tease an 11am Chiefs news conference ... or a 2pm news briefing ... And you can say, "We streamed this news conference as it happened live - you can watch live events on the FOX4 app."
Look for "BREAKOUT ELEMENTS" to add content and context to your rundown. This could be a specific web push, a helpful phone number, an extra element about a reporter story. Sometimes a recap is in order - bulleted on a fullscreen. Or a timeline.
TALK WITH REPORTER: Reporters often try to cram everything into their 1:15 story. Ask - is there something that can be a breakout element for anchors? An extra tidbit? A web extra? A fullscreen? Breakout elements add to the pacing and content depth of the show.
Jazz up how you present stories. It's routine to have a desk 2shot toss to boxes or a stinger to the liveshot. Shake it up. Use our various set shots to be more creative. A toss to a live reporter doesn't have to have both anchors. Get away from the constant desk 2shot toss.

NATSOUND: ALL video should have natsound. If an editor comes across video with no sound - that editor should alert the producer. If the video is of a band playing - and there's no sound - find alternative video. That's too disconcerting. Producers can put in a director note if there are no nats because of the source.
NAT POPS: A great way to get a viewers attention is with nat pops off the top of video. For example, start with sound up of several shots in a 21 gun salute ... then continue nats under for the script. Or use a nat pop to start a headline or tease.
BITES: Avoid soundbites from officials unless they are particularly compelling. You can usually take the information from official sound and include it in your copy. Soundbites are best if they are with "real people."
ALERT: BEWARE OF HANDOUT VIDEO / VNRs (video news releases - where someone else provides us video/sound.)
For the most part, we do NOT use handouts or VNR material in our newscasts. We want to shoot everything ourselves.
There are some exceptions. For example, St. Luke's may have a brand new machine that treats breast cancer. We would not be allowed in the hospital (COVID), nor would we be allowed in the operating room. So, they may offer video of the new machine in action in the operating room. That is an instance where using their video is ok. HOWEVER - per FCC rules - you MUST have a verbal mention and an on-screen courtesy, both saying from where the video came.
Example, SCRIPT: ST.LUKES IS EXCITED TO SHOW OFF A NEW MACHINE. (TAKE VO) THIS IS VIDEO OF THAT MACHINE FROM ST. LUKES...... (Courtesy super)
REPEAT: ANY video we did not shoot ourselves MUST have a VERBAL and ON-SCREEN courtesy.
What about viewer video? It is ok to use viewer video with permission. They may request a courtesy - or may be ok without it. It's always good to say, "This video is from a FOX4 viewer..." "Let's take a look at some viewer pictures / video..."
Include these codes as part of a slug in your rundown where appropriate. Click for more information.
