When to be WEATHER AWARE:
Any time there is a significant change for which viewers should prepare.
Mets should alert news managers, producers, and Creative Services when we are preparing to be or are Weather Aware.
LIVE:WIRE Procedures (The weather crawl)
The system has struggles sometimes particularly with the GPI triggers.
It's supposed to be put in for ALL severe weather alerts (tornado/severe thunderstorms-watches AND warnings) except for flash flooding.
For flash flooding, those will be handled on a case by case basis. I don't believe flash flood warnings are set for the GPI trigger but we can
get some bad flooding around the Metro especially and there may be times where we'll have MC insert the bug. For Flash flooding the bug
remains in for programming but can be removed for commercials.
The MET on duty should call Master Control to verify that the bug is inserted when a Watch/Warning is issued.
The MET on duty should make sure LIVE:WIRE (only) has been rebooted BEFORE an event.
Joe typically reboots all systems on Thursday evenings...but if something will affect a shift (on a Tuesday for example) make sure
the system is good to go BEFORE a watch is issued.
The following crawls will run on LiveWire:
IN NEWS: Tornado WARNINGS Only (the system should switch to this automatically if things are working correctly) including over commercials although odds are we'll be into wall to wall.
OUT OF NEWS: Tornado Watch/Warnings, Severe Thunderstorm Watch/Warnings for programming only.
(Note: the severe thunderstorm watches are a new addition.)
There may be some occasions where only one or two counties on the edge of the viewing area are under a WATCH...we'll deal with those scenarios on a case by case basis. If only one or two counties on the fringe of the bug map are under a WARNING...the bug should be on the air over programming.
We have made some changes and dropped a few of the fringe counties (for example around Topeka and towards Kirksville) that are not even considered our ADI to fine tune the map a bit more and reduce some of the alerts on it (especially for fringe stuff).
Odds are if it's overnight...make sure the bug is in. A MET can evaluate this as needed.
In EVERY CASE...err on the side of making sure the bug is inserted.
