islamic study center and retreat

this second architectural design studio for students in the 3-year master of architecture program introduced fundamental architectural design strategies and methodologies through relatively complex building programs and site design including urban housing and urban design exercises. these projects are at the bottom of this page.

the semester culminated with a site that bridged urban and landscape. the project below is a study center linked to the islamic center of washington. this final project incorporated and built upon lessons learned throughout the semester including responses to existing fabric, landscape and urban design, topography, codes and zoning while more introducing more conceptual demands, in this case, the role of islam and sacred traditions in architecture and urban design. the students developed these strategies into tectonic language, sequence, program layout and details.
