design foundations ii
tools and representation
this second course in a three-part design foundations sequence introduces students to the fundamentals of architectural representation. topics include architectural drawing conventions (plan/section/elevation, line weights, etc), orthographic projection and physical and digital models. the semester concludes with studies in advanced analog and digital rendering techniques including watercolors/washes, color pencil and ink and photoshop renderings.
the work shown here are from several semesters and include studies of mausolea at a local cemetery as well as mid-century modern houses in southwest washington, dc.
projects near the bottom are from summer high school programs in which students were introduced to fundamental design thinking, making, and representation. project 1 was based on jonathan friedman's exercises in the book "creation of space"; project 2 asked students to design a folding form which helped them not only represent design ideas but to think three- and four-dimensionally.
