Introduction to architectural design ii

master of architecture, 3-year program

urban housing

An intention of this studio for students in the second semester of the 3-year master of architecture program is to introduce fundamental concepts of building organizational strategies, structure, program, facades, codes and zoning. for the first half of the semester students examined and designed urban housing for washington, dc.

The project began with documentation and analysis of housing so that students, who have little or no background in architecture, can begin to understand underlying systems, patterns and spatial strategies. ostensibly, this project was about housing, but in a greater sense it was how architects organize a building, a site, a facade, a section and so forth all the while developing their fundamental graphic, digital and verbal presentation skills.
