stone stasis

stone stasis

inspired by first nation inuksuk, celtic cairns, hawaiian pohaku, and other rock balancing traditions, stone stasis is a form of meditation, of finding the balance where balance does not seem to be or could be. people often stop and suggest that it is magic. there is a mix of joy and trepidation.

there is understandable concern: does this celebrate the stones' nature, does it violate nature or even others' experience of nature?

a few years ago i stopped stacking in public parks and other public spaces because i no longer wanted to have an impact natural settings and put wildlife at risk. by the way, the united states national parks service's "leave no trace" program forbids this type of rock stacking.

so, today, whenever i stack stones, it is either in my or friends' yards.
