You might have seen something on Pinterest or YouTube that you want to try right away. Or you may have bought it for your small handmade business and want to create custom T-shirts, stickers, or wedding decor items. Switching from conventional crafting machines to an advanced machine like Cricut may make you feel unsure at first. But there is nothing to worry about, as you’ll find all the answers here.
Cricut offers several crafting machines, such as the Cricut Explore series, Maker series, Joy, and Joy Xtra. This guide works for every machine, and you’ll be able to create your favorite project with it. Let’s get started now.
Design Space is the official software for all Cricut cutting machines. It's used to create, customize, and send your favorite design to the machine. It should be downloaded and installed on your computer during the setup. Your machine won’t work without this app. Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to download Cricut Design Space to get started.
Open an internet browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.
Type "design.cricut.com" in the search field.
Select your machine from the list of available options.
Check the box to accept the Cricut Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
Hit the green Download button, and let the app download.
Once the app is downloaded, open your Downloads folder and double-click the Design Space file to start the installation.
If you see any prompt, enable it to run the installation process.
Once your app is installed, launch it on your desktop.
If you’re using a Mac system, drag the Design Space icon into the Applications folder.
Now, double-click on the downloaded file in the Applications folder to run the installation.
That’s how you can download and install the Design Space software on your desktop. After launching this app on your system, you’ll have to sign in.
After installing the app, you need to sign in or create a new account. It is similar to creating a Gmail account with a username and password. A Design Space account can be accessed on any device, and you can create a Design Space account using a unique email address, as each account requires a different email address. So, follow these steps to sign in or create a new Cricut account.
You’ll see a sign-in page after launching your Design Space. If you’re an existing Cricut user, enter your email ID and the strong password to sign in.
If you’re a beginner, click on the “Create Cricut ID” option and enter your full name, email address, and country or region.
After that, add a strong password for your account that you'll always use to sign in.
Once the account is created, you can access it in Design Space.
You’ve downloaded the Cricut Design Space software, but the setup is not complete yet. Your machine should be connected to your computer via either a wired or wireless connection. Your Cricut machine is compatible with a USB or Bluetooth connection. You can choose one that suits your needs and work environment. Here is an explanation of both methods.
If you don’t want the hassle of wireless settings and your devices are placed close enough, you can choose this method.
Turn on your machine and your computer.
Take the USB cable you received with the machine and connect one end to the back of your machine.
Connect the other end to your computer’s USB port.
Open the Design Space, and let it detect your machine.
If it doesn’t detect your machine automatically, you can select it manually from the list.
To set up a wireless connection, Bluetooth is best. It’s ideal if your devices are placed a little farther apart and you prefer not to use a USB cable. I personally like Bluetooth connections because they're smooth and hassle-free. However, you may have to access the settings.
On Windows 10/11
Confirm that your machine is turned on and within 10-15 feet of your computer.
Go to the Start menu at the bottom of your computer and search for Settings.
Select Devices under Settings, and then select Bluetooth & other devices.
Verify that Bluetooth is enabled, and select the “Add Bluetooth or other device” option.
Choose your machine from the list of available devices.
Select your machine, and click on Pair or Connect.
If you’re asked to enter a PIN code, enter “0000.”
If you’re using Windows 11, you need to select Bluetooth & Devices from under Settings.
Next, click the Add device option, and select Bluetooth connection when prompted.
Lastly, select your machine and complete the pairing process.
On macOS
Turn on your Mac and machine, and ensure that they are within 10-15 feet of each other.
Go to the Apple menu and select System Settings.
Select Bluetooth, and then select your machine when it appears in the list.
If prompted, enter “0000” as the PIN code. The machine light will turn blue, and your Mac will display “Connected.”
You’ve learned to download the Design Space and connect it to your device. It's time to set up the machine.

Open the app, click "New Product Setup," and select your specific cutting machine.
Now, the Cricut software will guide you through the remaining setup steps. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Once your machine is set up, click Next.

Launch a new project on Design Space, and add a basic shape.
Resize your shape to 1 inch or smaller.
Load a small piece of vinyl or cardstock on the cutting mat.
Hit the Load button on the machine, and click Make It on the Design Space.
Choose the correct material from the list in the Design Space.
Press the flashing Go or “C” button on your machine.
Once the cutting is done, press the Unload button.
Power on your machine, and keep it within 10-15 feet of your phone.
Go to Settings on your phone and enable the Bluetooth option.
Select your machine from the list, and enter the PIN code when prompted.
Download and install the Design Space app on your device.
Hit the Sign In button if you’re already a registered user.
Choose the option to create a new Cricut ID if you’re a beginner, and enter your details to create your account.
The email address you use will receive a verification message. Click the Verify Email button, and simply log in with your new details.
