In this guide, you’ll learn the basic setup process for your Cricut machine, including unboxing, downloading and installing the Design Space software, and connecting the machine to your device.

You need the following things to set up your crafting machine:
A compatible device such as a computer (Windows/Mac) or a mobile device (Android/iOS).
A broadband internet connection.
Make sure you have the power adapter that came with your Cricut machine (Note: Use only the cord included with your specific model, as power outputs differ between Explore and Maker series).
A USB cable or Bluetooth connection (Note: Cricut Joy and Joy Xtra connect via Bluetooth only).
Sample materials, such as cardstock or Smart Materials.
Cutting mat
If you have just purchased your new Cricut machine, start by removing protective coverings, foam, and tape (including the small protective foam behind the blade carriage). Place your machine on a flat surface with at least 10 inches of space in the front and back so your mat or Smart Materials can pass through without bumping obstacles. Ensure that the space is clean, cool, and dry. Check that all the accessories included in the box are present, such as the power adapter, USB cable, and sample materials for test cutting.
Design Space is the official software for Cricut machines. It's used to create your designs and cut them using your machine. It’s compatible with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. You need to download and install this app on your device, sign in to your account, and get started with your projects. Here are the steps involved:
Visit design.cricut.com and select or search for your machine model, such as Cricut Maker 3.
Select the box to agree to the Cricut Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
Click the Download button and wait for the software to download to your computer.
Go to your Downloads folder, and double-click on the .exe (Windows) or .dmg (Mac) file.
The file will then open and ask you to sign in. If you have an existing Cricut account, use your credentials, or create an account by filling out important details such as your full name, region, email address, and a strong password.
Once the sign-in process is complete, you'll be signed into your Cricut account.
Go to the App Store or the Play Store, and search for Cricut Design Space.
Choose the icon with a white square with “Cricut” in the center.
Tap the “Get” or “Install” button to download and install the app on your device.
Open the app and sign in using your existing Cricut ID. If you’re a first-time user, click “Create Cricut ID” and enter your name, email address, country or region, and create a password.
Next, connect your machine to a power outlet and then pair it with your PC or smartphone. Here is how to set up your machine:
Turn on your machine and place it near your computer so the USB cable can easily reach both devices.
Connect a USB cable to the USB port of your computer and to the machine.
Open the app, then go to the menu and select Machine Setup. Now, the app will automatically detect your machine through the USB connection.
Note: Cricut can’t be connected to a mobile device via a USB cable; only a Bluetooth connection is available to set up communication. Also, Cricut Joy and Joy Xtra models do not have USB data ports and connect via Bluetooth only.
On Windows
Go to the Start menu and open Settings, or search for Bluetooth directly.
Select Devices or Bluetooth & Devices and ensure Bluetooth is turned on.
Click “Add Bluetooth or other device”, and select Bluetooth.
Select your machine from the list of available Bluetooth devices (it will appear as your model name plus a 4-digit code, e.g., Maker3-XXXX).
If you’re asked for a PIN, enter “0000.”
On Mac
Go to the Apple icon in the top left corner and open System Settings.
Click Bluetooth and ensure that Bluetooth is ON, and wait for your machine to appear in the device list.
Click the Connect button next to the Cricut machine.
On Android/iOS
On iOS, open Settings on your mobile device and select Bluetooth. Toggle it on, and tap on your machine’s name when it appears.
On Android, open Settings and select Connected Devices. Then, select Connection Preferences and Bluetooth.
Enable Bluetooth, tap “Pair new device,” and select your machine model.
Note: Check the Bluetooth device name printed on the sticker near your machine's serial number if you cannot identify it in the Bluetooth list. Enter “0000” if a PIN is asked.
During the setup process, select your machine and follow the on-screen instructions to activate it. This will finalize your machine's registration. The app will automatically scan the machine’s firmware. It will also show a progress bar if an update is available. Ensure you don’t disconnect your machine or close the app when an update is in progress.
Once the update is complete, your crafting machine will restart, and the Design Space app will prompt you to complete your first test cut to ensure everything is working correctly. You can use the sample materials included in the box. Follow the on-screen prompts to press the flashing Load button (double-sided arrow) and then the flashing Go button (Cricut logo) to run your initial test project.
