Learn To Use Attach Tool in the Cricut Design Space App

Cricut Design Space is the companion design app needed to build with the Cricut Electronic Cutting Machine. Whether you’re a long-time Cricut customer, a beginner, or are thinking about getting a machine, the Cricut Design Space should have the software you need to use your Cricut. There are several options in the Design Space for creating and customizing projects. However, that’s not enough time to learn everything in one day. So today, we will start with a quick overview of what the software can do so you can start creating right away.

What is the Cricut Attach tool?

The Cricut Attach tool is one of the most helpful tools in the Cricut Design Space app, all the bottom of the Layers panel; you will find some other essential tools such as Weld, Slice, Flatten, and Contour. The Cricut Attach tool has two main functions in the Design Space.

First, the Attach tool places the various design elements in the same place relative to each other on the cutting mat on the Canvas. When you cut out the design, the place and spacing of the objects will be precisely the same. The Attach tool “freezes” the layout of the design to look the same on the cutting mat as it does on the Canvas.

Second, the Attach tool fastens other Linetypes (score lines, draw lines, foil lines, and performance lines). When using the Attach tool to attach writing lines and score lines to a shape, your Cricut machine will know to write and score on top of the shape instead of on a separate mat.

When to use the Cricut Attach tool?

The Attach tool places objects on the cutting mat in the same position or arrangement on the Design Space canvas. Use the Attach tool whenever you want to “freeze” the part of two or more shapes relative to each other so that they are cut at the same place. Or, use the Attach tool to include a draw line or scoreline to the top of a shape.

If you don’t Attach the tool, the Design Space will default to “Material Saving Mode” and use the least amount of material to organize objects on the cutting mat as much as possible.

Here are the guidelines to use the Cricut Attach tool in Design Space

Let’s open the Cricut Design Space and work with a few examples. If you need to cut out the finished design, you need free Design Space software and a Cricut machine. Here are some easy steps for using the Attach tool in the Cricut Design Space.

  1. Open the Cricut Design Space app, and then start a new project. Add pictures and text to the project and arrange the layers as you desire.

  2. Choose the two or more layers you want to Attach. You can attach draw and score layers such as shape, text, and line type.

  3. Press on Attach. Your layers will be inside the Attach drop-down “Folder” in the Design Space Layers panel.

Some of the things to remember when you are using the Cricut Attach tool

  • The Attach tool will work on two or more layers. If you’ve only one layer selected, the button will be “grayed out,” and you will not be able to use it.

  • Attach tool will work whether the objects are overlapping or separate. Attach tool keeps things in one position; it doesn’t change or remove overlapping cut lines.

  • Also, the Attach tool will work on objects, whether they are already attached, in groups, hidden, or multi-layers.

  • Still, Text layers will be editable after using the Attach tool. That means you can still edit for typos, change the font, and fix letter-spacing.

  • The attached objects will be cut on the same mat, turning the same color on the Canvas. Do not Attach things you want to cut to different colors.

The attached layers assume the properties of the bottom. For example, if you Attach a red circle on the top side of a blue square, the resulting enclosing layers will both be blue.
