Sections are a lookup list of standard sizes commonly used in printing. Sections determine how BOS behaves and how the printing and paper is calculated in the Estimate.
Main Menu > Setup > Sections
Find - Enter text here and click Find to search for a specific Section.
Lookup Description - This is the description for the Section.
Quote Description - This is the description that will be shown on the quote.
Type - This shows what Printing Type the Section is linked to.
Size - This indicates the section size.
Repeats - This indicates the number of times the Section is repeated, eg - An 8-page section will be repeated 4 times to make up a 32-page magazine.
Depth - This indicates the dimension for the section depth.
Width - This indicates the dimension for the section width.
New - Click this button to create a new Section.
To edit an Section simply double-click or right-click and select Edit.
Before you create a new Section you will need to complete the following setups:
The sections Setup has 3 Tabs:
Settings
Default Press
Finishing
Main Menu > Setup > Sections > New/Edit
Description - Lookup - This is where you name this Section. This is for internal purposes, so use a descriptive, short name that will be easy to type-select from the drop-down list during estimating, eg A4P for A4 Portrait.
Description - Quote - This is what will appear on the Quote Letter so a more customer-friendly name, such as 'Leaflet' or 'Poster', can be used.
Section Type - This is where you select the type of the Section. The Section Types are explained in more detail below. Options include:
Standard - This would be applicable for business cards, A4 posters, etc.
Duplicate - This is applicable for NCR books and continuous forms that contain sets with the same artwork.
Bookwork - This is applicable for bookwork such as magazines, brochures, etc. Once selected, the Bookwork Section Calculator button becomes visible.
Custom Imposition - This is applicable for custom impositions where the Section is irregular, and might overlap. Eg, die-cut cartons.
Make sure to first understand the different Section Types.
4. Print Type - This is where you link the Section to a Print Type, such as litho, large format, digital, continuous, flexo etc. More about printing types.
5. Section size (DxW) - This is where you enter the vertical and horizontal dimensions of this section in mm. Traditionally, size is indicated vertically and then horizontally, eg A4 Portrait will be entered as 297 x 210, and A4 landscape will be entered as 210 x 297.
When entering the section size, make sure the section orientation (portrait or landscape) is the same as the press work size orientation for Imposition ease.
Landscape: D < W
Portrait: D > W
6. Bleed - This is where you set the margin or bleed in mm to be added to each side of the section.
7. Repeats - This indicates the number of times the Section is repeated, eg - An 8-page section will be repeated 4 times to make up a 32-page magazine.
8. Size (For Quote) - This is where you can enter your finish size. This will automatically populate the Size field in the Estimate header if it is blank. This is a text field that can be manually entered or populated from the lookup list. The lookup list can be updated using the Edit icon next to the field.
9. Add to Quote Description - If this is selected, this Section's information will be added to the Quote Letter's description.
This is used to automatically select the Press and the Imposition generally used to print this Section. Estimators will be allowed to override the default selection.
If a Default Press is not selected, the Estimator will simply select a press from the Presses list when making a Printing Estimate.
Main Menu > Setup > Sections > New/Edit > Default Press
To add a new Default Press click Add. To edit the existing press double-click or right click on the press and select Edit.
Main Menu > Setup > Sections > New/Edit > Default Press > Add/Edit
Press - This is where you select the Press that is used by default to print this type of Section.
Options - This is where you select the running option, eg Sheetwork or Work and Turn.
Default - This setting is used to indicate the default press if multiple presses are linked to a section. When one of the other linked presses is selected, this imposition will be used.
Imposition - This is where you set the default imposition for the selected Press. The imposition is set by specifying the quantity Across, the quantity Down, and the Rotation.
Summary - This provides a summary of the Work size, Section size, and Press constraints.
Imposition diagram - This shows the imposition layout visually.
Once a Default Press has been set-up, it will automatically be selected in the Estimating 'Select Press' window. See image below:
This is where mandatory Finishing Services can be linked to the Section, eg Cutting for Business Cards, or Section folding for a Magazine Section. These Services will automatically be added to an Estimate when this Section is added to an Estimate.
Main Menu > Setup > Sections > New/Edit >Finishing
Service - This is the name of the Service that has been added.
Qty Up - This is where you can specify a "Qty up" if you don't want the default to be 1, eg boxes could be die-cut 4-up.
Linked - This can be selected when Finishing Service must be explicitly linked to the Section.
For example: In Bookwork, Scoring will be linked to the Cover section and not the pages section.
When a Finishing process is linked to a Section, it will be shown when making a Printing Estimate under the Finishing tab. See screenshot below:
4. Add Item from Services - This allows you to select Services to add to the Finishing. See image below:
By clicking the Add Item from Services button, a Find Services window will appear. Select a Category, in this case Finishing and click View. Click on the desired service and click Select.
Section Type defines how the Section behaves in BOSPrint and how the Estimate is calculated. There are four Section Types available in BOSPrint:
Standard
Duplicate
Bookwork
Custom
This would be applicable for Sections that have commonly-used specifications, such as for business cards, A4 posters, etc. Below is an example of how to setup of an A4 leaflet using a Standard Section Type, with the fields that are specific to this setup:
Section Type - Select Standard.
Section size (DxW) - Enter the vertical and horizontal dimensions in mm of the item, eg 297 x 210 for an A4 portrait leaflet.
Bleed - The default is set to 3mm bleed around each A4 page, but can be edited according to your requirements.
Repeats - On a Standard Section Type, each Repeat will have different artwork.
This type of Section is applicable for NCR books and continuous forms that contain sets with the same artwork. Below is an example of how to setup an NCR books Section Type, with the fields that are specific to Duplicate Section Type.
Section Type - Select Duplicate
Print Type - Select the NCR option (this needs to be created in Setup).
Section size (DxW) - Enter the vertical and horizontal dimensions in mm of the item, eg 210 x 148 for an A5 booklet. Remember to add the binding margin if required.
Bleed - Typically NCR books do not require bleed, so this can be set to zero.
Sets - This shows how many sets of duplicates you need for the job. Eg, an Invoice booklet with 100 unique invoices in it, each with 3 copies, will be captured as Sets: 100.
This is applicable for bookwork such as magazines, brochures, etc. Once selected, the Bookwork Section Calculator button becomes visible.
By using the Bookwork calculator the Description fields will automatically be populated.
Below is an example of how to setup a 16 page A4 portrait Section, with the fields that are specific to a Bookwork Section Type.
Section Type - Select Bookwork.
Bookwork button - Select this to open the Bookwork Section Calculator.
Note - Only with Bookwork, the Section size shows the total size of the imposition, taking into account page size, bleed, and page quantity. Using the Calculator is advised.
A. Page size (DxW) - Enter the vertical and horizontal values of the final page size, eg 297 x 210.
B. Bleed - Spine - Enter the bleed in mm for the page, eg 3mm.
C. Spine - This is for the cover only, and allows you to make provision for the width of the spine (as above).
D. Pages (Across x Down) - Enter the quantity of pages from left to right, top to bottom, as they will be laid out on the print sheet, eg 4 x 2.
E. Rotate - Select if these pages need to be rotated in order to produce better imposition.
F. Section size (DxW) - This is calculated automatically based on Page size, Bleed, and Pages.
G. Pages - This is calculated automatically and shows the total number of pages in this Section.
Click Accept to automatically populate the remaining Settings fields.
This is applicable for custom impositions where the Section is not regular, and might overlap. Eg, folding die-cut cartons, as below.
Below is an example of how to create a Custom Section Type for a trianglular carton with 50x100mm sides, with the fields that are specific to a Custom Section Type.
Section Type - Select Custom Imposition
Print Type - Select the Printing Type.
Section size - Enter the custom vertical and horizontal dimensions in mm, eg 50x100.
Qty up - Enter the 'Qty up' value so that the sections are laid out on the print sheet in the most efficient manner, in this example 12.
Repeats - This is the number of designs on the print sheet - in this case, the same design is used.
Size (For Quote) - This is the total printing area as per the imposition.
