Scratchboard
Earlier this year I did a drawing of my cat which was a lot of fun to make and my family really liked it once it was finished. When I was told that we could pick what we wanted to draw for this assignment I thought that it would be fun to do my other pet, Casper. I picked a photo that I knew would portray light and dark as well as shadows knowing that it would create more of a challenge, but also make it more fun to draw.
To make this piece of artwork I used two different kinds of carving materials on scratchboard in order to scratch off the black ink and reveal the white clay underneath.
I started out by gridding the scratchboard to be the same dimensions as the grid that I had created on the reference photo. I then use a technique to trace out the basic lines of the dog onto the scratchboard using a pencil. From there, I began scratching away at the ink to reveal the white clay and went square by square while referring back to the reference photo.
