Sgraffito Tile

For this project I was told to create a small rectangular tile that I could create a sgraffito design on. Once The tile was created I had to draw up some sketches and carve them out on the tile.

I started out by rolling a large handful of clay into a thick tile shape and cutting off any edges that weren't even. from there I painted on three coats of a a blue glaze and waited for it to dry. Once it was dry I lightly sketched on my design and began using various tools to scratch off the areas were I wanted the design to show through. Once that was finished it went into the kiln to be fired and when it came out it was finished.

For this assignment I wasn't really sure about what kind of design I wanted to do. I began out by just sketching out random doodles and I liked the idea of doing different flower doodles all in one design. I was really happy with how my design turned out because it looks a lot like my sketch and I had a lot of fun creating this piece.
