Duck Stamp

Murky Waters

Drawing Paper, Colored Pencils

12"x9"

I was assigned to create any kind of art as long as it involved a duck. After looking through many different ducks I decided that I wanted to do one that I have physically seen before, and the Stellar's Eider Duck stood out to me because of its vibrant colors.

To create this piece of artwork I used Prisma colored pencils on drawing paper. As I would ad colors onto the page I would use a blending material to blend all of the colors together and create a smoother and more realistic look to the art. I also used erasers here and there to undo any mistakes I made.

I first started out my project with the plan of doing watercolor, which meant that I also started out by using watercolor paper. I quickly changed my mind after starting because I didn't like how the water coloring was looking for this assignment. I decided to change my paper to drawing paper and my materials to colored pencils. I started out by creating the water. I would add a bunch of different colors onto the paper, and then, I would go in with a blending tool to blend them all together until I was happy with how they looked. Once I was finished with the water, I moved on to drawing the duck. I did all of the same techniques in terms of blending the colored pencil until I liked how it look. Throughout the course of the piece's creation, I would occasionally go in with an eraser to fix any mistakes, and would occasionally alter some of the colors in the water as well as the shadows.
