Maker's Mark Stamp

For this assignment I was told to create a stamp made by hand using clay that I could use to identify my future work from others. For this stamp I carved out a small flower design in the top of the stamp so when I stamp my future art pieces there will be a flower imprint on them.

I started out by rolling out a thick piece of clay in order to make a compacted and short stick of wet clay. From there I molded in into a handle with a widened top. Once I created the base I began sketching my design and after creating a couple I picked a flower. Then I lightly traced it on the flat surface of the stamp and began carving out around the pedals until I was happy with the results. After that it went into the kiln and was finished.

At first my design for the stamp was an A with cool details like flowers and swirls coming off of it. However right as I was about to begin the process of carving I decided that it would be cool to do a flower. I drew up a few different flower design and decided on a small and simple flower design. I was pretty pleased with how my design came out, especially because it was my first time ever using clay. I found it to be a little bit hard to carve the excess clay out from around the pedals but overall I was happy with how it looked in the end.
