For this assignment I was instructed to create a vase/cup shaped object made out of coils of clay and eventually carving designs into it. With the design that I chose I wanted to do something more abstract and funky that would also stand out. To make this carved cup I used coiled pieces of clay and c-49 glaze.
To create this project I used a hand powered machine to compact blocks of clay into coils and smoothed them together to create the shape of my cup. Once it had a little bit of time to harden I began carving the design into the cup and used a wooden tool to help smooth everything out. Once the design was done It was put in the kiln, glazed, and then fired.
With this project I really like the finished color of the glaze and how the design came out. I enjoyed creating this piece using the coil technique because it was a very quick and easy way to make a sturdy cup. I'm really proud of how my piece turned out and I think that it is a good representation of my understanding for this concept.
