Subject: New iCoP to help shape what’s happening with the Data Warehouse/X.500
How will we, the University of Minnesota IT community, respond to changes in the Data Warehouse/X.500 associated with the Enterprise System Upgrade Project (ESUP)?
On June 25th from 1:00 to 2:30pm in Physics 133 (http://www1.umn.edu/twincities/maps/Phys/), we’ll begin to explore this question with a kickoff meeting for a new informal community of practice dedicated to helping each other gracefully migrate our infrastructure, reports, and downstream applications based on changes to the Data Warehouse and X.500 directory. The answer to this question and the way we go about preparing ourselves for the changes ahead will be shaped by those that choose to participate. We hope you’ll consider attending.
The tentative title of this iCoP is “Integrating Data, Enterprise Architecture, and Applications (IDEAA)”. The practice of this community will be focused on exploring the “nuts and bolts” associated with integrating enterprise data, developing best practices, and helping to standardize institutional approaches so its easy to do useful things quickly with minimal complexity. We’ll explore questions such as:
- What will the new Data Warehouse look like at the table level? What tables are going away? Which ones are staying?
- What table fields are changing and how? What’s the new business logic for pulling the same data I used to?
- What technology options will there be for connecting to the new Data Warehouse, or related data sources (i.e., PCOM/HEPCOM)?
- How will I get data from whatever system replaces the X.500 directory?
As details become available, the IDEAA iCoP will be a venue where we can discuss these questions and their potential impact on developers, DBAs, analysts, and others who might be interested in data integration. For example, if table YYZ in the Data Warehouse is changing, we might review a “before” vs. “after” document so folks know *exactly* what table YYZ will look like going forward. We also anticipate covering additional topics, such as any pain points folks are seeing, best practices from the community about how to X or Y, “show and tell”/demos, and “deep dives” into particularly thorny data-related issues. We intend to use a Google Site and Google Docs to assemble and publish the findings of the group, and do our best to broadcast our meetings so all five campuses.
We want to create a community where we can come together to help each other out and move our data ecosystem forward. Our first meeting will be held June 25th 1:00-2:30pm in Physics 133, with future meetings occurring about once a month. We hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
The IDEAA Incubation Committee (Colin DeLong, Joe Goggins, Robert Wozniak, Bill Collings)
