For this assignment we were asked to first make a value strip using scratch tools. The point of the project was to scratch off the black where it was lighter. For example for the summative scratch board I chose a picture that I took of Mels Drive in Diner in universal, seen in the picture above the picture has places were it's all white and all black, at those places we were asked to scratch of the black to create a white surface. But it got complicated when it wasn't a solid color but it was grayer, because then we had to use lines to create different shades. The subject of my create in the picture is the diner and the cars that are sitting in front of the diner. To create this project we used scratch tools that had different nibs. We had rounder nibs and pointier nibs. We also had a tool that had a bunch of points to create different scratch marks. For this project I used a few elements of art such as value, shape, line, space, texture and form. I used value with the different lines and space to create lighter or darker spaces. I used shape with the letters of Mels Diner, and the cars. I used line with all the lines to create the values in the picture. I used space in between the lines to create the value. I used texture on the left side on the window creating the different textures. I also used some principles of design such as balance throughout the whole project when I transferred the picture to the scratch board. I used emphasis on the parts that were whiter such as the letters in Mel's Diner. I used pattern when I had to create a grayer color because I had to cross hatch. Finally I used unity throughout the whole project when I used the different values. My project evolved over time because before I just had a bunch of lines with no value, but over time I added more lines to create different shaped and value and to make it look more 3D like it is in the picture. There isn't really a meaning behind my artwork because to me it was just a picture. But it does remind me of happy times because when I was there I had a lot of fun. This project relates to my life because I took the picture and I ate there. I am proudest about how the wording came out and also the car furthest to the left because I think I did a pretty good job with the shading from light to darker on it. i struggled the most with getting that grey color and also the car the furthest to the right. This is because I couldn't just draw in black, so I had to make a shape of a dark car shading out white. I do believe my artwork could be stronger. I think this because some parts of it I am really not happy about like the floor and the inside of the diner. If I were to go back I would focus more on those two spots instead of going super fast to get it done.
