Blind Contour Drawing

Artist Statement: For this project, we were first asked to draw our hand without looking at our papers. We did this by turning in the opposite direction of the paper and putting our hands out in front of us. Then the next class we drew a self portrait without looking at our papers. When we were done with this, we had the options of adding color then or if we wanted to add more people, or hands to our paper. Once we thought we were finished drawing our hands and people, we moved onto adding color. I chose to use water color pencils and water colors. I did this so I could have a dripping effect on the page. I envisioned having warm and cool colors separate, but then have the water color effect have them merge together nicely. For this project I used a few different elements of design. For example, I used color, value, shape, line, and space. I used color when I added color to the black and white paper. I used value with the different colors. I used shape with the shape of the hands and face. I used line with the sharpie to create my hand and face not looking at it. I used space when I added the raindrops all around the faces and hands. For the principles of design. For example I used balance, contrast, emphasis, rhythm and unity. I used balance with the shapes and hands and how many there were. I used contrast with the contrasting of the different colors. I used emphasis because I think my attention is drawn to the two heads because the colors are more broad and sharp. I used unity with the colors. I don't really think there is a meaning behind this piece of artwork. This project relates to my life because it is my piece of artwork and it is also my hand and face that is being resembled. I am proud of how some of the hands came out because I wasn't very good at it. I struggled with what to do in the extra space. if I were to go back i wouldn't have the raindrops I would probably add something else
