Contour shoe drawing

For this assignment, we were asked to draw our hand holding an object. I chose to hold a paint brush because it would position my hand in a different way. These drawings weren't just any kind of drawings, they were contour drawings. This means we had to use our eyes to follow the object and have your hands motion follow the motion of your eyes. For the sneaker/shoe drawing, we were asked to draw our hands with the same techniques we used for drawing our hands. This time, we had to do three different views of our shoe, one view was a sky view, the next was a side view and the final view was the front view. To creates both of these drawings I used the 4B pencil so I could create good texture but also have nice skinny but also thick lines.

When creating this project, we were supposed to include elements and principles of art. For the contour hand drawing, I used line, texture and value. I used line when I was creating the hand to find the general shape the position of my hand was in. I used texture when I was creating the lines and crevices in my hand. This is because, when my hand was in this position, many more lines were created causing texture throughout my hand. I drew this by having some lines skinnier than others. I used value because, we weren't aloud to shade the darker spots created in our hands, so instead, in parts it went lighter or darker, I made the line go lighter or darker. For the shoe drawing I used the same elements but added in form. I did this by making all the view of the shoes 3D. For principals of design for both drawings I used unity, contrast and emphasis. I used unity because all the elements of design are in agreement with one another creating pleasing projects. I also used contrast when I did lighter and darker parts of my drawings, along with rough or smooth parts. Finally, I used emphasis because in each picture you are drawn to one specific part first.

The meaning behind the artwork is simple. In each drawing a word I would use to describe them would be value. This is because, both of the drawings show deep meaning of value. I think this because, they both show still objects, but without shading, just value. The hand drawing relates to my life because I love to draw. Drawing is a way for me to get anxiety or stress out, and the picture shows that side of me. Also, the shoe drawing shows my love of running and sports because the shoe is a sneaker. And when people usually see sneakers, they are usually thought of as athletic shoes. For my hand drawing, I am most proud of how my hand came out. This is because, In the beginning of the project, I wasn't quite sure if I could make it look good, but as I kept going I started believing in myself more and created the end result. For my sneaker project, I am most proud of how I drew the directions of the laces. I say this because, the laces of the shoe don't go in one direction, they twist around and change direction. In both projects I originally struggled with the shapes of my hand and sneakers. I overcame these struggles by just continuing to draw them. If I were to make my artwork stronger I would make my lines less messy by cleaning them up more with an eraser.
