artist research assignment

For this project we were given a few links to websites in which contained many artists that we could choose to research. After choosing said artist, we were asked to study their style and lives. After we created a slide show of their artwork, and a paragraph about such things. Seen below is the paragraph I wrote about my artist: David Hollander ---

David Hollander

Age not being specified, some other information about David, David has found himself to be quite the traveler. With an educational background beginning with David studying at the University of Colorado Boulder, and University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia where he became an undergraduate student studying ceramics and physics. For the next few years, 15 to be exact, David’s sculptures and other artwork made many appearances all throughout the world, from Washington all the way to Italy. He doesn’t stop there. At a point in his life, David was teaching, lecturing, all while having multiple publications of his own work. Along his journey, he found himself to be a resident in Boulder, Colorado where he lives with his family and continues to further his work.

David explains his sculptures to be “alive.” They are natural pieces of art, he goes on to say, ultimately meaning that he lets them be free, and take actions they feel need to be taken. He begins with fired ceramic pieces, that he then joins together again and refires them leaving them to be very flexible. While in the kiln he lets the sculptures move how they want. Being flexible, the long thin strands bend and connect to pieces that are below, making his sculptures unique and more abstract.

David Hollander dives deeper into his work; “They do not look like bodies, but they are bodies, and operate within their own ecology. Feeling is built as a consequence of this physicality”

He refers to his sculptures as human bodies–not only bodies but those with feelings. His art is “fragile” and therefore treated as so. Developing these structures over time David cares for them, treating them as their own individuals, connecting to them, and identifying their beauties.

I chose this artist, David Hollander because, on the artaxis page, David’s work was unlike any other. His work had meaning and a story of its own. An underlying significance that I didn’t see in the other artists’ work. The sense of abstract found in his work means he never has the same piece of art, they all have their own story. This to me stood out and connected with me. I struggle to understand that individuals in their bodies––like David refers to his work––are all different, each with their own significance. This made me feel

inspired and grounded as I continued to look at his art and learn about his story.
