linocut prints

For this project, we were asked to find a picture of ourselves and put it into an app called acorn. Once we were in the app, we were asked to make the picture black and white and ––––––––––––––. For this project, the subject of my creation is me! For this project like I said before we used the app acorn, after this app we printed out pictures black and white. On the back of the printed paper we used a 6B pencil to cover where I would need to draw. After, I outlined and drew on all the black parts that were printed but when I traced it we put it over a cork like substance linoleum. After this we used ––– to rub over the linoleum and then we printed it on a piece of white paper. After we had mastered it on that paper we had to do a black and white print(top left), an extended print (bottom left), alternate background (top right) and then artist choice (bottom right).

For all of these prints combined, the elements of design I used were color, shape, line, and form. I used color with all the prints besides the black and white, but for all the other ones color was involved in some way, shape or form. I used shape when I was mirroring what I saw on the paper from the app acorn on to the linoleum piece. I used line in the hair to create a sense of depth and contrast. I used form when I carved into the linoleum. For this project the principles of art that I used are contrast, emphasis, and pattern. I used contrast when I carved in the hair to make it have more visible interest. I used emphasis because the picture is a self portrait, so it creates emphasis on me or the person. I used pattern on the print on the bottom left in the background. mY project evolved over time because at first when I first printed my piece of linoleum still had little lines where ink showed up on the paper where it wasn't supposed to so I had to continue carving those out which ended up being my AP's. It also evolved over time because I changed the style and background a lot to see what I liked the best.

Personally I don't really think there is a meaning or story behind this piece of artwork because none of the backgrounds have a significant thing to make a story or create meaning. This project and the prints I created relate to my life because the picture and carving is of me and I also took the photo. I am probably proudest about how the prints came out because I was really expecting a lot of white spots to show up where the ink was supposed to be. I am also pretty proud at the artist choice one because I like that one the best. I struggled a lot with getting ink on the top left and right where it created the lines because no matter how much I carved out of those spaces to try and minimize the amount of lines they would always continue to show up. I overcame these struggles by trying to make it into something instead of letting it annoy me. If I were to go back I would probably redo my nose because right now it looks like I have a pig nose and it also doesn't look like what it did in the picture.
