Sgraffito

Zentangle

sgraffito tools, clay, glaze

Sketch

Lead, paper

the main purpose of this art piece was to make a zentangle-looking clay piece. At first, I was going to make a drawing of the ocean but then realized it was too original and decided to make a zentangle design that had white space.

I used sgraffito clay carving tools to make this art. these tools are metal headed with a hoot to carve the clay. I first cut out a slab of clay, molded it to the shape i=I wanted then let it air dry for about 42 hours. By this point, the clay was dry and very fragile. Next, I added a glaze coat and started carving.

the most difficult part of this was making sure the clay didn't crack. Another very difficult part was trying to carve the clay carefully so that the glaze didn't chip off while i was carving. This did not end up very well as you can see on the top section of this art as the glaze is missing in some areas it wasn't supposed to.
