Scratchboard Dog

pointed blade, fiberglass brush, cross hatcher on scratchboard paper

The idea that guided my artwork while making the scratchboard design was a picture of my dog. I chose this picture because I couldn't find any other picture and my previous drawings have been of my dog so I would like to continue that trend until I have another subject to work on. I was trying to figure out how to start using scratchboard as a way to use art since I haven't never used it before.

Not many materials were needed to create this project. I mostly used a fiberglass brush to make the soft strokes of the fur of my dog. I also used a cross hatcher to make the mouth area of my dog and the whiskers to show thicker lines. lastly, I used a pointed blade to create thick solid scratched to make the area white like I did with the background. The most important material I used for the was the scratchboard paper which is essential to create scratchboard art.

If I were to do this project again, I would use lighter strokes with the tools because I realized that it is much easier to make the paper white rather than darker. I learned this when I scratched too much around the face of the dog, which caused there to be less value and shadow where there needed to be but I could not go back to fix it which was a big mistake.
