Build A Path

Colored pencil, Marker, Graphite on Canvas Paper

9"x 12"

This project was created to give a positive message and to inspire people to consider donating organ and tissue to those who need it. I gave a positive message by using the quote "Rebuild a path to someones life with organ and tissue donation". This means someone who has a fallen path to living still has a chance to live if you rebuild the path by giving them "more lives", which is shown and represented by the path of heart from a sad, rainy island, leading to a happy, sunny island with flowers and symbols that symbolize happiness.

I started off by sketching this art out with graphite. I used a light 2B pencil to make very soft sketches of where the islands, cloud, and sun would go. This graphite made it super easy to revise my work because it is easy to erase and i can redo any parts if needed. I also used colored pencil to give the soft colored look to make this paper appear like it has small texture. The colored pencil shows a light view of color without it being too harshly pigmented. Lastly, I went over some areas with a marker to make the parts that needed to show more attention stand out. The markers gave a very harsh color pigment to give the art a smooth, popped out look. For example, I used marker over to hearts to show vibrance and symbolize strength and vibrance. Personally, I think these materials work very well together and I had no struggles with the materials.

In the process of making this art piece, I found it very important to use a stencil while creating the letters. I found it extremely helpful because it made my art appear more neat as it would if I didn't use the stencil. Something I found difficult while using the stencil was using the transfer method. It was hard to create enough force from the pencil to the sheet of paper to give the transfer effect. I solved this problem by going over the letters with sharpie to give it more of a clean look.
