Tom Bamberger was born and raised in Milwaukee missouri in 1948, that is also the place that he resides today. He attended Boston University where he studied philosophy, then the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to teach mathematical logic.
Tom's interest in photography was sparked when he received his first "real" camera as a wedding present in 1976. Wielding this new found spark and the beauty that he saw in landscapes all around him he started to take pictures of the world around him. Meanwhile, he ran a gallery and was a writer in his hometown. From the early 1980s until 2003, he worked with Milwaukee Magazine and for a time was contributing editor. He was a photography curator at the Milwaukee Art Museum and architecture critic for Urban Milwaukee. Over time Tom's art slowly gained popularity until the point he is at today. "Art is so fraught with error. It’s experimental. To make a really great work of art, you have to get lucky.”
Dave Jordano was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1948. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from the College for Creative Studies in 1974. In 1977 he started a successful commercial photography studio in Chicago shooting photos for national advertising agencies.
Since 2000, Dave has concentrated on making himself an awarding winning photographer. He was awarded an honorable mention in the Houston Center for Photography’s Long Term Fellowship Project in 2003, and received the Curator’s Choice Award the following year for his work on Small African American Storefront churches on the south side of Chicago. In 2006, 2008, 2013, and 2016 Dave has been selected as a top 20 finalist in Photolucida's “Critical Mass” International Photography Competition. He was also selected for inclusion in “One Hundred Portfolios”, a compilation of the work of 100 leading photographers from around the world. A major exhibition of his work from the “Articles of Faith” project was held at the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, Illinois in 2009.
No two people are the same. Everyone knows that. But with the differences between the two artists are matched by many similarities. To start off with the basics Tom Bamberger and Dave Jordano both are white, male, photographers. If we look at the subjects of their photos you can notice that both of them take pictures of buildings, landscapes and that sort of thing. However one of the differences between them is that Dave Jordano also takes pictures of people while Tom Bamberger focuses more on the environment rather than the living things in said environments. Another difference is that Dave Jordano does his shoots in more of a urban environment, while Tom does his in a more rural setting.
Of course in this part everyone will have different opinions. That's what a critique is, an opinion and everyone has very different opinions. But here's mine. I personally prefer Tom Bamberger's work just because of the subjects that he shots. In my opinion the work that Dave does is just not as visually pleasing. On top of the subject I just like that Toms pictures are short and wide so he can get the full landscape.
