Photography I

Final Summary Portfolio Reflection:

Overall in this class, I have improved as a photographer. When I started in this class I would talk pictures of things just how they were. I wouldn't get any interesting angles on my subjects I would not do anything interesting with the lighting. I would just take a picture of something straight on nothing special. But by the end of the class, I was taking photos with all sorts of a subject but I would just different techniques such as rule of thirds, selective focus, silhouette, and many other ones. If you look at one of the pictures I took at the beginning of the digital photograph unit. There is one of a man sitting in a boat at a boatyard. All it is him in the center with nothing special but by the end of the year, I was taking pictures like the one under shadows and reflections for film photography. I used rule of thirds for the shot and I got down at an angle so the sun would hit the subject at the perfect angle. This is just one of the changes in my photos as the year progressed but there are many others. To conclude I believe over the year the photos that I take have gotten better due to me learning and using the different photographic techniques.

For me, the hardest thing in this class was taking photos inside with film. In the end, I stopped taking shots inside all together but for a while, I tried and struggled. When I would take photos inside the problem was not enough light getting to the film. One thing that was not helping this was the fact that my film camera from home had a broken light meter meaning that I would have to use the app on my phone. this app worked well for the most part but some times it would be a little off. I ended up bracketing most of my shots due to this but inside the app didn't help at all. There was just not enough light in general.

I am very proud of one shot that I did for shadows and reflections during the film photography unit. It is the one with the moorings that har hanging with the light reflecting off of them. I am proud of this because I was able to use the rule of thirds for both the subject (the moorings) as well as the truck that helps frame the shot and keep your focus there. I also use a slight angle up to make the light reflect better. Overall I am just proud of the image because I was able to incorporate many different techniques to create the photo.

My work in this class shows that for the most part, I am on time and that I like to be in control of things. You can see that I am on time (for the most part) with my online portfolio, I get everything uploaded on time (except for like 2 prints) and I had my artist statements all done on time. You can also see that I like to be in control of the materials that I am using in what type of camera I use. If I was using the camera that I brought from home or if I borrowed one from the class one I always used a fully manual camera. I did this because a. I like to learn how all of this stuff works instead of just shooting photos and b. I just like to be in control of the image so if it's too dark I know that next time I can adjust the aperture a bit.
