Artist Statement

For these pieces, I was given the prompts: draw a cropped self-portrait, draw your hand in an interesting configuration, and draw an object you depend on regularly. I did this, and I like the outcome of the three pieces, considering I only spent about 20 minutes on each. These pieces relate to my life because two of them are me, and the third is something that I use daily. A pen. For all these pieces I used graphite pencils. For the hand and the pen, I stuck with just a 2H pencil, and for the eye, I used a 2H and a 2B. For this project, I got to use my favorite material graphite, which I feel very comfortable using, and for the majority of my art career was the only material I used. So going back to graphite felt pretty nice, and I decided to try my shot at shading again since I haven't in a while. For the description of my project, I'll use the eye, since it was my favorite sketch out of the three. I started by making the basic shape of the eye. The outline of whatever the white part is called, and the iris as well as the pupil. Then I added the outer part of the eye with the eyelid and numerous 'creases'. Then I added parts of the eye where there were highlights and reflections. After that, I went on to the eyelashes. The bottom eyelashes, in particular, were tough and I ended up doing them over a few times until I got something acceptable. After the bottom eyelashes, I did the top ones, which were certainly not as difficult. Then I just added some definition to the lines with the pencil and moved on to the shading. I shaded the white of the eyes, the eyelids, and then the iris and pupil. The shading process went quicker than I thought it would, to be honest. When I saw done with the shading, I was pretty much done with the drawing. But I decided to touch the final product up with the blender to smooth it all out, and then I used a 2B pencil to go over the pupil and iris to add some extra definition. And then I was done. If I was to continue the eye, I would probably add the eyebrow and draw some of the face around the eye for added character. But not much other than that.
